13 '90s Movies You Forgot You Were Obsessed With

by Olivia Youngs

If you were a kid in the '90s, chances are you grew up watching the movies that we all know and love 20-something years later as classics. No one could forget movies like Home Alone, Toy Story, or Mrs. Doubtfire. But what about the flicks you haven't thought about in years? Sometimes kids' memories aren't the sharpest and its definitely possible that there are '90s movies that you forgot you were obsessed with as a child. And because of that, I say it's time for a refresher.

You know that feeling of nostalgic excitement when you remember even the faintest hint of something you thought you forgot, be it a scent from your grandma's kitchen, a favorite photo of a family vacation, or a page from an old journal? Remembering old movies is kind of like that. Whether these were the movies you rushed home to throw in the VCR after school, the ones you watched with your friends at sleepovers (and what '90s girl didn't watch Mary Kate and Ashley movies at every sleepover ever?), or maybe you never actually watched some of them at all. Either way, these movies all deserve to be remembered and re-watched for old time's sake.

1

'Casper'

Casper was a friendly ghost who fell in love with a human girl. Though the film was released in 1995, the sweetness hasn't faded.

2

'Edward Scissor Hands'

Starring Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder, Edward Scissor Hands was one of those slightly disturbing, slightly endearing films the '90s was so famous for.

3

'Free Willy'

The first movie of the Free Willy series is the most loved and least cheesy of the four films. (Yes, four.) You have to admit that they really tugged at our childhood heartstrings though.

4

'Richie Rich'

After the richest boy in the world's family goes missing, he uses his cunning to save them. And somehow manages to live inside a fancy *ss Ronald McDonald House.

5

'The Little Rascals'

Based on a TV series titled Our Gang that spanned from the 1920s to the '40s, how could we forget about one of everyone's favorite childhood movies?

6

'Harriet The Spy'

Starring Michelle Trachtenberg as Harriet, a sixth grade girl with a penchant for solving mysteries and writing cryptic notes in her secret spy journal, everyone wanted to join the CIA after seeing this film.

7

'The Land Before Time'

Although there are approximately one million movies in this saga (or 13, but it felt like one million), five of them came out in the '90s, making them a pretty big part of our childhoods that you probably forgot about.

8

'Homeward Bound'

Walt Disney Pictures

I know you're lying if you claim the return of Shadow, Sassy, and Chance to their family didn't reduce you to tears.

9

'Joe Versus The Volcano'

One of the lesser known Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan flicks, Joe Versus the Volcano is the story of a hypochondriac who offers to throw himself into a mystic volcano in hopes to save his life. Yeah, it didn't make sense then either.

10

'10 Things I Hate About You'

OK, you probably didn't forget about this one, but it still deserves an honorable mention. The Shakespeare spin-off starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger is a classic to this day.

11

'Buffy The Vampire Slayer'

20th Century Fox

Sure, everyone remembers the TV show, but did you know that there was a Buffy movie before the show ever hit the scene?

12

'Drive Me Crazy'

Slightly more grown up than the others, but definitely a forgotten classic, Drive Me Crazy is about a high school girl who has to find a date to the prom. Original? Maybe not. Worth watching? Definitely.

13

Every Mary Kate And Ashley Movie Ever

Though most of the Olsen twin movies were released straight to video when they were older, some of the classics like It Takes Two, Billboard Dad, and Switching Goals were '90s movies through and through.
