13 Foods That Will Improve Your Sex Life

by Jill Di Donato

With Valentine's day just around the corner, the whole nation is thinking about getting it on. But did you know that certain foods will improve your sex life? It's true. Sex-boosting fare gives new meaning to the trendy term superfoods, and combines two of my greatest pleasures: eating and lovin' (though I don't advise doing these activities at the same time unless you're really dexterous).

It just so happens that a lot of food that improve your sex life as also healthy. And I, for one, always feel sexier when I eat clean. Look, I'm not saying give up on cheese fries; I certainly haven't and probably never will. But the old adage about how important it is to eat junk food in moderation holds true, or so says blogger Yael Cohen, founder and CEO of F Cancer. But eating clean can do more than put you in a good head space. “There’s a growing body of evidence that some of the vitamins and components in foods can enhance sexual function and sexual experience,” Jennifer R. Berman, the director of the Berman Women’s Wellness Center, in Beverly Hills, California told Health magazine. With that in mind, here are 13 foods to keep in your fridge, should you need a boost in the bedroom.

1

Avocados

Registered dietitian Julie Upton told to Health avocados aren't just yummy, they're an aphrodisiac. That these green goddesses contain heart-healthy fats that get the blood pumping (and flowing to all the right places).

2

Strawberries

With or without chocolate, these strawberries are full of libido-boosting methylxanthines, according to Upton. And for those who are wondering, methylxanthines are super antioxidants, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Oh, and speaking of super, strawberries are super sexy to feed your SO.

3

Chocolate

You know what else contains methylxanthines? Chocolate. Because methylxanthines are plant-produced natural products, you want to procure pure chocolate as opposed to chocolate that's been processed and mass-produced. And, Dr. Eva B. Cwynar wrote on the sex blog ShareCare that chocolate can help bring on the big O. "Chocolate also contains phenylethylamine which is known to stimulate the release of dopamine into the pleasure centers commonly associated with an orgasm," she writes. Yes, please.

4

Arugula

In addition to its aromatic flavor, Upton said this leafy green is filled with antioxidants that can help absorb toxic elements in the environment. I wonder if that includes a bad date? Only one way to find out...

5

Citrus Fruits

Packed with potent antioxidants, Upton told Health that any type of citrus fruit can help a man's vitality.

6

Red Wine

Repeat after me: pinot noir. Don't you feel sexier already? According to Shape magazine, researchers at the University of Florence found that women who drank two glasses of red wine a day were more revved up to go than women who consumed other alcoholic drinks. The key is to stop at two glasses. Too much wine will put you to sleep.

7

Truffles

Do I need an excuse to eat truffles? Nope. But the fact that these special fungi have a "special chemical" to raise the libido make me want them even more.

8

Watermelon

The more hydrated your body is, the more lubricated a woman will be down there, or so reported Huffington Post. Watermelon is packed with fluids that keep your muscles and tissues moist, and sensitive to stimuli. Makes sense to me. And tastes delicious!

9

Sunflower Seeds

The oils in these, ahem, seeds, have been shown to boost hormones, making you feel like a sex-crazed teen all over again, reported Shape.

10

Apples

Packed with quercetin, an antioxidant, that according to Healthline can ease painful bladder syndrome as well as genital discomfort, apples are suggested for people who suffer from discomfort during sex. (See your doctor if you are suffering pain during intercourse.)

11

Milk

Kaayla T. Daniel, nutritionist and author of The Whole Soy Story, told Shape that people need natural, saturated kinds of fats found in whole milk in order to get the sex hormones flowing.

12

Sweet Potatoes

These tots are sweet for a reason: they're rich in potassium, which Health magazine reported can help erectile dysfunction.

13

Oysters

You were waiting for this one, and indeed, the urban legend is true. Men's Fitness reported that the high levels of zinc found in these slippery shellfish help a man's virility.

Feeling in the mood? These lucky 13 foods can help you get there. Don't forget to save room for cheese fries, or maybe that's just me.
