15 'Star Wars' Quotes For Every Parenting Situation

by Sarah Bunton

If you're not a Star Wars fan, then fair warning that there will be plenty of potential spoilers ahead. (Also, why are you not a fan of Star Wars?) The film franchise has not only spanned four decades, but it's woven itself into the pop culture fabric of our society. From hardcore enthusiasts who cosplay as their favorite characters to kids who are seeing these films for the first time, there's something in them for everyone. In fact, there are actually quite a few Star Wars quotes for every parenting situation.

Pretty much everyone knows the major quotes, such as master Yoda's guidance, "Do or do not there is no try," or Han Solo's baller response to Leia's confession of love, "I know." But you might not have realized, that between the layers of science fiction and action, there is a hefty amount of wisdom when it comes to navigating the hectic ups and downs of parenting.

So whether you see yourself as more of a casual viewer of the fantasy film franchise or you already have your family's Halloween costumes picked out (Han, Leia, and baby Kylo Ren, anyone?), you can appreciate these Star Wars quotes that work in every parenting situation.

1

"Your eyes can deceive you; don't trust them." — Obi-Wan Kenobi

You may think that your little one is peacefully sleeping, but they're actually quietly working on destroying their diaper and bed sheets.

2

"I have a very bad feeling about this." — Luke Skywalker

OK, what parenting situation doesn't this apply to? Trick question. The very definition of parenting is having a nervous feeling in the pit of your stomach that disaster could strike any minute. You're always just one bowl of flipped over spaghetti away from a messy night.

3

"Ready are you? What you know of ready?" — Yoda

Ready? Because, to me, it looks like you have on one shoe, no pants, and magic marker on your face. Fact: as kids get older, it somehow seems to actually take longer to get them ready to go.

4

"Beep boop. Squee. Wee-ooh." — R2D2

This is what everyone else hears when you exclaim that your tiny tot has learned to talk. Don't be disheartened, though. That gibberish is actually pretty endearing.

5

"I'm in charge. I'm in charge now!" — Finn

Are you stating a fact or trying to convince everyone, yourself included, that you've got everything under control? It may sound silly, but sometimes you really do question who's in charge in your house when your kid streaks the house and refuses to wear clothes.

6

"It's a trap!" — Admiral Ackbar

Whether it's your kid sneakily asking both parents for permission hoping one will say yes or you child is asking for "just one more story," it's most likely a trap. But, hey, falling victim to your child's manipulative ploys are a bit of a parenting badge of honor.

7

"Never tell me the odds!" — Han Solo

Ignorance truly is bliss and can allow more room for ambitious endeavors. So when your well-meaning mother-in-law is warning you about trying to take all the kids to the beach by yourself, tell her you don't need to know the odds.

8

"You're my only hope." — Princess Leia

Said to your partner, sitter, parents or in-laws, sometimes you just need a break. When you know you've reached your limit and are about to crack, never be afraid to ask for help. Even a moment of peace can do your frazzled mind a lot of good.

9

"The Resistance will not be intimidated by you." — Poe Dameron

Whether you're experiencing the terrible twos, have a three-nager, or an actual teenager, sometimes you need to remind your kids that their antics will not change your mind on whatever issue is being debated.

10

"I call it 'aggressive negotiations.'" — Padme Amidala

Some call it bribery, but I call it the only way to get my child to take a nap. Sometimes you just have to know when you've lost battle and agree to let your kid have a sugary snack if they take a nap without fussing.

11

"Your Jedi mind tricks don't work on me, only money." — Watto

That awkward moment when your child has finally figured out that those toys aren't "broken" and the TV isn't "sleeping." The jig is up and your kid means business now. Guess you'll just have to get more creative when it comes to convince your kid that they don't need loud games or unlimited screen time.

12

"Don't do that." — Leia. "Do what?" — Han. "Anything." —Leia

Often times it's just easier if you tell your children to do nothing rather than list all the things they can't or shouldn't do. Trust me, your toddler will find a loophole if you tell them a specific thing not to do. For instance, "Don't put anything in your mouth that isn't food or drink." *Eats apple puzzle piece.*

13

"May the Force be with you." — General Dodonna

Nothing feels better than solidarity in parenting. Whether you say this to your partner or a fellow mom who is struggling to get her toddler strapped into the grocery cart, I guarantee you it will reassure them.

14

"This is madness!" — C3PO

Three words: child's birthday party. Or another equally terrifying three words: school field trip. Any time you get a bunch of kids hyped up on fruit drinks and snacks, madness is sure to ensue.

15

"Pass on what you have learned." — Yoda

Ending on a sappy note, perhaps the biggest lesson Star Wars can teach parents is the importance of having open communication with your children and taking the time to teach them things. Yoda was truly wise indeed.
