21 Netflix Movies To Watch After A Breakup That'll Help You Get Over It

by Sarah Bunton

Nobody really expects a breakup to happen to them. Whether you've been completely blind-sided or assumed you and your partner were just experiencing a rough patch that would pass, calling it quits with your significant other is rarely an easy thing to go through — regardless of if you're the dumper or dumpee. If you're trying to dust yourself off, but are still struggling, there are plenty of Netflix movies to watch after a breakup that'll help you get over all that heartbreak faster. In my experience, logging some serious hours on the couch is one of the best forms of relationship recovery.

One of the great things about living in a day and age when films are only a click away, is that you can stream them any time, any place, and with any one. So you can turn what was formerly a pity party of one into a girls night in with all your favorite rom-coms. If you prefer to process your pain in private, you can ugly cry to your heart's content without anyone judging you for your cinematic choices. That, my friends, is the ultimate movie-watching dream.

So grab a pint of ice cream, your favorite pajamas (don't lie, we all know you have a pair), and check out these movies available on Netflix to help you get over your breakup faster.

1

'Begin Again'

If the title isn't a dead giveaway, Begin Again follows Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightly as they help each other find a fresh start

2

'Comet'

If Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and 500 Days of Summer had a movie baby, it would be Comet. In this delightfully topsy-turvy tale, Justin Long and Emmy Rossum explore the ups and downs of love.

3

'Amélie'

There's a reason Amélie has stood the test of time. Anyone who has ever longed to connect with someone will totally be able to relate to Audrey Tautou's title character.

4

'The Break-Up'

Again, the premise is summed up in the title, The Break-Up. Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn give a raw and real portrayal of a relationship from start to finish.

5

'Hot Fuzz'

This may not be the first film that comes to mind when you think of post-breakup movies, but trust me when I say Hot Fuzz will have you forgetting your troubles just as quickly as Simon Pegg and Nick Frost do.

6

'10 Things I Hate About You'

It may be based on Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, but this iconic '90s film will make your heart sing.

7

'Love Actually'

Not just a flick for the holidays, Love Actually spans an entire range of human experiences that will leave you feeling a little less alone.

8

'Drinking Buddies'

Modern love can be messy, complex, and exhilarating. At least that's the vibe Drinking Buddies will give you.

9

'The Decoy Bride'

What starts out as a bit of a French farce meets wild goose chase mash-up, turns into a shot at the real deal for two hopeless romantics, starring Kelly Macdonald and David Tennant in The Decoy Bride.

10

'Bridget Jones's Diary'

When Renee Zellweger's title character struggles with feeling like a spinster, who happens to find herself caught between Hugh Grant and Colin Firth's characters, she realizes that loving yourself comes first.

11

'Magic Mike'

Sometimes you just need to Netflix and chill with a guilty pleasure flick like Magic Mike to help you snap out of your funk. The star-studded cast isn't too shabby, either.

12

'Grease'

This classic Broadway show turned big screen sensation streams straight to your screen. You'll love singing along into your hairbrush during all the iconic musical numbers in Grease.

13

'13 Going On 30'

What if magic wishing dust was a real thing? Well, in 13 Going On 30, a young teenager has her wish granted and wakes up as her 30-year-old self, played by Jennifer Garner. Navigating an adult world with a middle-school mind has never been so entertaining.

14

'Mona Lisa Smile'

Set in the conservative '50s, Julia Roberts' character is a professor at a women's college where she aims to inspire students to seek beyond what society expects them to be. Feel empowered and check out Mona Lisa Smile.

15

'Southside With You'

Though this film might take some creative liberties, Southside With You follows a young Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson on their first date. In my opinion, this movie is about as close to perfection as you can get.

16

'Punch-Drunk Love'

Adam Sandler doesn't always have to play the funny guy, as you'll see in Punch-Drunk Love. Sandler's character is plagued by a combination of loneliness, relentless teasing, and emotional issues. But will he find the calming yin to his quirky yang?

17

'Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World'

Although the premise is a bit dark — it is the end of the world, after all — Steve Carrel and Keira Knightley shine against the bleak backdrop in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.

18

'Take This Waltz'

Michelle Williams' character in Take This Waltz proves that you don't have to wait to reach the mid-life point before experiencing something of a crisis. Finding strength and brutal truth in her female friends, this movie's message hits close to home.

19

'Hateship Loveship'

Kristen Wiig has pretty much cornered the "character hits rock bottom to find redemption" market. But Hateship Loveship offers a deeper role for Wiig, whose character encounters an unlikely (potentially catfishing) romantic possibility.

20

'Leap Year'

In a world where Irish tradition dictates that a man must accept a woman's proposal on February 29 — and you also have enough money to just fly to Dublin like it's no biggie — Leap Year follows Amy Adam's character as she encounters increasingly difficult obstacles while attempting to find, and propose to, her boyfriend.

21

'Iris'

In case you needed a little reminder that you are a fierce and powerful individual, you can take a page out of 93-year-old Iris Apfel's book. In Iris, this inspiring documentary demonstrates that nothing — not even age — can prevent you from being fabulous.
