7 '90s Songs You Had No Idea Were About Drugs

by Ni'Kesia Pannell

I listen to more music from the '90s than I do current day sounds, and I'm often picked on because of it. But I don't care because the feelings that '90s tunes give me are indescribable. When I was a kid, the way the music made you feel back then was a feeling that you can't explain.] Regardless of what they were singing about, '90s music the music that was given in the '90s] was some of the best music to be heard, in my opinion. Being that everything sounded so good though, it was easy to sing '90s songs you had no idea were about drugs and think nothing of it.

Back then, I literally listened to everything. So, signing lyrics from songs that I probably had no business singing was easy to happen for me. From R&B to the Rock and Pop fusion, everyone was singing about drugs in a way that probably never would've been discovered if someone didn't break it down eventually. With catchy wordplay, a fun and flirty beat, and vocals coming from those that we wouldn't expect, being blindsided by the actual meaning to some '90s songs has quite possibly happened to many people.

Need a quick list of songs that you may need to reconsider belting out now that you're older? These seven cuts from the '90s are here for your review.

1

"1st Of Tha Month" by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony

Yes, of course Bone Thugs-N-Harmony is reminding you to pay your rent at the beginning of the month with the song "1st of tha Month," but they were also telling you to cash your welfare checks and come get "served."

2

"Semi-Charmed Life" by Third Eye Blind

Released in 1997, "Semi-Charmed Life" by Third Eye Blind just sounded like another fun song to me. However, according to Rolling Stone, the song was actually about a couple on a drug binge.

3

"Brown Sugar" by D'Angelo

D'Angelo's talent and love for black women probably overshadowed the fact that he wasn't referencing his black queens in this track. Singing out, "See we be makin' love constantly / That's my eyes are a shade, blood burgundy," the singer-songwriter was definitely talking about smoking weed.

4

"I Got 5 On It" by Luniz

When I was a kid, I really didn't think "I Got 5 On It" was all about weed. Say what you want, but it wasn't until I got older that I really realized that this whole song was about smoking a joint and having "5 on it" was about having money to put in on the weed.

5

"There She Goes" by Sixpence None The Richer

At first listen, Sixpence None The Richer's remake of The La's catchy tune "There She Goes" seems as if it's talking about being head over heels for a certain little lady. However, I'm sure the Christian rock/pop band didn't bet on "Racing through my head / Pulsing through my veins" really being about drugs.

6

"You're Makin' Me High" by Toni Braxton

According to Toni Braxton's Behind the Music episode, the sexy and sensual "You're Makin' Me High" was definitely not about sex like we all thought. The veteran songstress stated that the song was actually about smoking a joint.

7

"Last Dance With Mary Jane" by Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers

No, the last dance was not with a girl named Mary Jane like the video makes you believe. Mary Jane was actually his pot.
