7 Gross Things That Happen While Kissing, Other Than Saliva Swapping

I am convinced that kissing is one of those things that gets better with age. When you're 14-years-old and having your first make out session, you're awkward, bumbling, and using way too much tongue. The only good thing about those teenage make out years is that you probably didn’t realize all the totally gross things that happen while kissing another human being.

Hear me out. I'm not saying kissing is gross. Locking lips with my boyfriend is one of my favorite things to do. But there are gross things that can happen while you're showering someone with mouth-to-mouth affection. I mean, think about it. You’re kissing someone with the part of your body that chews food, tastes sort of stale when you first wake up first thing in the morning, and breathes in all sorts of germs. You're mixing together your tongues, saliva, and breath to show how much you want someone. That's kind of gross. And it just gets worst when you think about these nine gross things that happen while kissing. But don't let them deter you from your future make out plans. Simple let them serve as a reminder of just how much you love your partner.

1

You're Swapping A Lot Of Bacteria

Kissing is a total saliva-fest, but do you have any idea what's in all that spit? A whole lot of bacteria. A study published in Microbiome actually found that an average of 80 million bacteria are transferred in a 10-second kiss. Although exposure to germs can help your immune system, 80 million of them may be a bit of an overkill.

2

You Get Lots Of Testosterone If Kissing A Guy

Apparently men's saliva has testosterone in it, so those big open-mouthed, sloppy kisses he's giving you? He's trying to pass on the testosterone to put you in the mood. Sounds sweet, but also sounds kind of gross, right?

3

Kissing Came From A Feeding Ritual

No one's really sure where kissing came from. But, as Time notes, some scientist speculate that its existence stems from the way our mothers use to chew up our food and deposit it in our mouths. Sounds. . . yummy?

4

You Run Your Tongue Over Their Teeth

This always super grosses me out. Maybe it's because you felt a popcorn kernel stuck in those teeth or the fact that it's teeth and they're used to chew up food, but hitting my kissing partner's teeth with my tongue makes the hair stand up on my neck. So gross.

5

You Forgot To Get Rid Of Your Gum

We've all been there, right? You're chewing gum when someone initiates a kiss and you're too far into the lip lock to say, "Oh wait, let me toss my gum." Now you have to try and keep it in the back of your mouth or wedged into your cheek before you - UGH - pass it into your partner's mouth. Gag!

6

You Make A Lot Of Gross Noises

When you're into it, you don't notice the sounds. But if you're not really feeling the kiss, all you'll hear are the lapping sounds of your tongue, the squishy noise of your lips pressed together, and all that spit mixing around.

7

You Realize Your Partner Has A Tongue Ring

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but this is kind of gross. Tongue rings do absolutely nothing for me and kissing someone only to feel that nasty metal rod shoved through their tongue? Lost my lady wood. Done.
