7 Signs You're Making Your Oily Skin Worse

by Ni'Kesia Pannell

Learning about different skin types has become one of my top interests. Not just because it helps me to find a good skincare routine for myself, but it also serves as a way to help my friends work toward having the best skin, too. For my friends with oily skin, finding the right set of products to reduce the issue is imperative. However, even with changing their products, I've reminded them to pay attention to the unexpected signs you're making your oily skin worse because every product for oily skin won't work for every person with oily skin.

On time, I arrived at friend's house as she was finishing her makeup. Within one hour of us leaving, her face had become so oily and it looked as if her makeup was about to slide right off. Since she'd never really taken that as a sign of her oily skin getting worse, she continued to blame it on the foundation being cheap and didn't do the right research to fix her problem. It was only after she started using primer and changed over to an oil-free foundation that her makeup looked less shiny after application.

Though it may be easy to blame certain products for your skin not being up to the standards you'd like, sometimes all it takes is being a little more aware of what your skin needs before reaching for any old product. So, if you're one that deals with oily skin and aren't sure if it's taking a turn for the worse, these seven signs might be able to help you out.

1

Your Skin Is Dull And Thick

According to WebMD, oily skin will look dull and thick when dehydrated. Though it may seem unbelievable, your skin can be dehydrated and oily at the same time. To help with this, be sure to wash your face no more than twice a day and after you've sweat a lot. Additionally, make sure that you are drinking enough water each day.

2

You Always Feel Like You Should Dry Your Face

Bustle noted that when your oily skin is getting worse, you'll always feel the need to dry your skin. However, drying out your skin can actually trigger the glands in your skin to produce more oil. Rather than drying out your skin, however, you want to find a routine that keeps it hydrated.

3

You're Breaking Out More Than Before

Very Well noted that breakouts on your cheeks, chin or forehead become more common with super oily skin. To help with this, you should use an astringent and invest in oil-free and water-based skincare products. Additionally, you should try to avoid scrubbing your skin, as it only causes irritation.

4

Your Skin Looks Shiny After You Put On Makeup

According to Stylecaster, priming your skin and getting oil-free or mineral-based makeup products can help with controlling your shine. Since your pores naturally produce oil, when it's mixed with the oil in your makeup it can cause your pores to clog.

5

You Find Yourself Picking In Your Face More

Wiping, picking, or touching in your face more often is a huge sign that your oily skin is becoming worse than before. The Huffington Post noted that constantly touching your face can trigger acne on and beneath the surface of the skin and can cause your pores to become clogged.

6

Your Face Becomes Shiny After You Cleanse It

If your skin looks shiny after you've cleansed it, you may need to change out your cleanser, as Allure noted. Some foam cleansers include sulfate, which strips the skin of water and produces more oil. Switching from a foam cleanser to a gentle, water-based alternative can help reduce the shine.

7

Your Hair Near Is Constantly Oily

According to Bustle, if your bangs or hair closer to your face are constantly oily, that's a sign that your sebum production is getting worse. Try pulling the hair out of your face to help.
