7 Ways To Keep Your Hair From Falling Flat, Even On Your Worst Hair Days

by Meg Kehoe

It’s hat season, which can so often mean arriving to your destination with your once luscious locks lying flat on your head. What’s a girl to do when the season for staticky hair has arrived? Rather than giving up and letting our hair become sad and limp, it’s time to fight back against bad hair days, and start paying attention to all the ways you can keep your hair from falling flat. Whether you’ve got a bob, a lob, or a mane that goes on for days and days, there are plenty of ways to keep your hair full and luscious.

Rather than taking matters into my own hands, I spoke to Max Tyler at Antonino’s Salon. I’ve trusted him from bleach to brunette, from blunt bangs to a bob. The man has never steered me wrong, and he’s always got great advice when it comes to how to keep my hair not only happy, but looking glorious. Whether I’m wearing a hat or not, following these seven tips and tricks has carried my hair to great heights, even on days when my hair feels a little flat and lifeless. Try these out when your hair is feeling sad, and reap the rewards of fuller-looking hair.

1

Blow Dry Your Hair Upside Down

The easiest way to infuse your mane with a little extra volume? "Blow that hair dry upside down," Tyler says. "Even if it's just the roots, blow drying upside down will lift your hair." Another sure-fire way to give your locks a lift? "Use a round brush to finish drying your hair, and you'll see even more volume."

2

Wash Your Hair Less

"Don't over wash your hair," says Tyler. "If you're washing too often, you're stripping the natural oils from your hair, and ultimately, creating a head full of flat hair."

3

Use Dry Shampoo Between Washes

Rather than washing every day, consider using a dry shampoo between washes. "Use a dry shampoo the night before, sleep on it, and brush it through the next morning," says Tyler. "The dry shampoo will help soak up the oil on your scalp, but applying it the night before will insure that you're not left with too much powder or residue."

4

Use A Root Volumizer

Using a root volumizer a few times a week is a quick fix. "Too much product will wind up weighing your hair down," says Tyler. "But using a volumizer can help lift your hair quickly." Tyler recommends something like Aveda's Pure Abundance Hair Potion, which goes on like a powder, but quickly turns to an absorbent lotion.

5

Tease Your Hair

"Tease your hair, but sparingly," says Tyler. "Too much teasing can ruin your strands, cause breakage, and if you don't do it correctly, it can look unnatural." For up-dos, blowouts, and everything in between, Tyler relies on Spornette's Little Wonder Brush.

6

Switch Your Part Up

"If you regularly part on one side, try the other," says Tyler. " Because your roots are used to lying a certain way, switching it up makes your hair appear bigger and fuller, almost instantly."

7

Consider Cutting Your Hair

This tip is not for the faint of heart. "Cutting your hair on the shorter side puts less strain on your roots, and you'll maximize your volume," says Tyler. "Tell your stylist you want a cut with more volume, and they'll be able to lead you to the proverbial volumized water." Whether it's a shorter cut, or layers, a haircut can do wonders for your volume.
