7 Ways To Score A Free Doughnut On National Doughnut Day

I usually don't get too excited over the hundreds of national holidays this country has to celebrate foods and drinks, but give me some ways to score a free doughnut and I'm ready to party for National Doughnut Day.

Let's be honest, it's the best of the best when it comes to food celebrations. Doughnuts are basically the happiest food ever. Wake up on a Saturday morning and want to kick-off your weekend? Pick up a box of doughnuts. Feeling a little down on a Wednesday afternoon and need a pick-me-up? Grab a doughnut. Want to be the queen of the office and make everyone's day? You need a dozen doughnuts.

National Doughnut Day also has a pretty great history and it doesn't involve a social media campaign. According to Krispy Kreme, back in 1938, National Doughnut Day was established to honor the Salvation Army's "Doughnut Lassies," who were responsible for serving treats (like doughnuts) to soldiers during World War I. Because resources were limited, doughnuts were only fried in batches of seven, and two members of the Salvation Army, Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance came up with the hack of frying them in soldiers' helmets. The first celebration of National Doughnut Day was implemented to raise funds during the Great Depression and to celebrate the Doughnut Lassies. In fact, the doughnut is now a symbol of service and is still passed out in disaster areas by the Salvation Army.

To honor your favorite happy little treat and National Doughnut Day, it's time to get out there and grab a doughnut. With these seven ways to score a free doughnut, you're sure to spread a little cheer to yourself and celebrate the history of doughnuts!
