'The Last Jedi' Trailer Theories You Need To Hear

by Jenn Rose

Get ready to participate in (or at least be subjected to) eight months of wild speculation, because the teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi has dropped, and although it's two minutes long and completely mesmerizing, it really doesn't offer much information. Luckily, there's no shortage of fan theories about The Last Jedi, and its trailer, and while some are completely bonkers, they still might be worth exploring, if only as a thought experiment.

I'll start you off with mine. Did you know that Boba Fett didn't actually die in the Sarlacc pit? That means that it's theoretically possible that he could show up in The Last Jedi. And since he's a clone of Jango Fett, that means that underneath that helmet, he'd look exactly like his dad. Temuera Morrison, the actor who played Jango, is almost exactly the age that Boba would be now. And his casting in Moana was announced just a couple days after The Last Jedi wrapped, almost as if Disney was waiting for him to finish. Now, do I think that Morrison is really going to play Boba Fett in the new movie? Eh, probably not. But it's still fun to think about! Watch the trailer below and see if you get inspired.

Anything? If you don't have your own theory, I've got you covered. We'll start with the "well, duh" ones before getting into the more ridiculous ones.

Luke Will Train Rey As A Jedi

I mean, that's pretty much the point of the whole movie, right? We know Rey's Force-sensitive, and The Force Awakens ended with her meeting Luke, who was last seen training his good-for-nothing nephew. She looks like she might be using the Force to lift these pebbles, and the trailer opens with Luke guiding her through a vision all about the Force. Plus, it's been established that within the context of the title, "Jedi" is plural. This is a safe bet.

Kylo Ren Is A Double Agent

This theory holds that Kylo Ren joined the dark side so that he could destroy it from within. He's not really obsessed with Darth Vader; he's obsessed with Anakin, and he had to kill Han because in order to become a Sith, you have to sacrifice a loved one. That would definitely make him a more likeable character.

Mace Windu Is Alive

There's a theory out there that Mace Windu is actually Supreme Leader Snoke. How? Well, we know that the reason Darth Sidious looked so rachet is because his own Force-lightning backfired on him. So maybe he did the same to Mace, and then when Mace fell, he got that scar. This is pretty silly, and it's been debunked, but Samuel L. Jackson did record a video for the Star Wars Celebration, and in it, he claimed that his character was still alive. "We know Jedis can fall from incredible heights and survive," Jackson said.

Rey Is A Kenobi

If she's not a Skywalker, some reason, she must be Obi-Wan Kenobi's grandchild, because they're both Force-sensitive, and they both... uh... live alone in the desert and wear brown? I suppose it's possible that Obi-Wan fathered a child at some point, but he dedicated his entire life to watching over Luke; not keeping track of his Jedi offspring seems out of character.

Rey Is Luke's Father

Some people think that Rey is the reincarnation of Anakin, which would make her Luke's father. This is bad and dumb, and I really hope it's also wrong.

Snoke is Darth Vader

Because they have similar scars. Nope. Get outta here with that. Snoke is a bad guy, and Anakin turned good again before he died. Then he was burned in front of a bunch of people. There is no reason for this nonsense theory to exist.

Snoke Is Darth Plagueis

This has been explicitly debunked by both J.J. Abrams and Pablo Hidalgo, Lucasfilm's Creative Executive, a.k.a. the person who's in charge of keeping track of every fact in the Star Wars canon. Just let Snoke be Snoke, people!

Rey Isn't Going To Be A Jedi

This sounds crazy on its surface, but hear me out. Luke seeks to bring balance to the Force. The Force has both a light side and a dark side, so being a Jedi – all light – doesn't make sense. Plus, it's a super hard code to stick to, as we learned from his father and nephew. To truly balance the Force, one must embrace both the dark and light sides, and use the Force neutrally. That's what he'll teach Rey to do, thereby restoring order in the galaxy.

The new trailer closes with Luke saying it's time for the Jedi to end, and this is the best explanation for it. This might be the most plausible theory of all.
