The Ultimate Mother's Day Playlist

by Lauren Schumacker

What's a Mother's Day brunch — or other gathering celebrating moms, really — without a themed playlist to go along with it? While you're celebrating your sweet mom, turn on a Mother's Day playlist rather than simply turning on the radio or letting a baseball game play in the background (or does that just happen at my house?). Whether you're celebrating at home with family and friends, at a restaurant of a family dinner, or in the car taking your mom on an adventure around town, a festive, mom-loving playlist is sure to entertain and put you in that Mother's Day spirit.

Mother's Day doesn't have dedicated songs like Christmas, but you can still put together a collection of songs that depict the mother-child relationship. Even better, you can make it specific to your relationship. From cuddling with you as a baby to giving you away on your wedding day, there's a song about moms for practically every moment throughout your life. Moms don't always get the thanks and recognition that they should, but pulling together a playlist full of songs by artists who can say what you feel better than you can is a fun and thoughtful way to add just a bit more ceremony to her day. So turn up the volume and press play on the following Mother's Day-theme songs.

"Where You Lead, I Will Follow" by Carole King

In some circles, this song is known as as "the theme to Gilmore Girls," a show that was all about capturing mother-daughter relationships. The loyalty and love that each of the Gilmore ladies shows toward the others (even if it's just a glimmer at times) is the perfect spirit with which to celebrate Mother's Day.

"You've Got A Friend In Me" by Randy Newman

This song is great for Mother's Day because, even though it's about friendships, it captures the longevity and love characteristic of mother-child relationships.

"Mama" by Spice Girls

This song is the apology everyone owes their mom for being a terrible teen and a love song to the friendship that some moms and daughters are lucky enough to develop after those rough teen years are over.

"The Perfect Fan" by Backstreet Boys

Who's a bigger fan than your mom? No one, that's who. The Backstreet Boys get that and sing this song for each of their moms.

"Somebody's Hero" by Jamie O'Neal

This song is about mother-daughter relationships and how they change over time.

"Sweetest Devotion" by Adele

According to USA Today, Adele wrote "Sweetest Devotion" as a tribute to her son. What better way to celebrate Mother's Day than to listen to a song about how much a mom loves her baby?

"Blue" by Beyoncé Ft. Blue Ivy

Like Adele's "Sweetest Devotion," Beyoncé's "Blue" is about her daughter, Blue Ivy, who also makes an appearance on the track, as reported by HuffPost.

"Who I Am" by Jessica Andrews

This song is about how your family, specifically your mom, can positively shape the person you turn out to be. The perfect tune to listen to with your own mom.

"Dear Mama" by 2Pac

This song is a thank you from 2Pac to his mom for all that she did for him growing up. You probably have some things you should thank your own mom for, as well.

"Thank You, Mom" by Good Charlotte

Like 2Pac's "Dear Mama," this song is a thank you letter from Good Charlotte to their moms. It runs through a list of all of the things their moms taught them and did for them, many of which are pretty universal.

"Mama's Song" by Carrie Underwood

This sweet song, from Carrie Underwood to her mom on her wedding day, serves to both tell her how much she loves her as well as reassure her that she's given her everything she needs and everything will be OK.

"Like My Mother Does" by Lauren Alaina

This song, about the similarities between daughter and mother, is sweet and relatable and really tells mom how much you admire and appreciate her.

"Hey Mama" by Kanye West

West wrote this song as a tribute to his mom, Donda, according to People. It captures how much he loves and appreciates her, as well as how thankful he is to have had her.

"The Best Day" by Taylor Swift

This video is chock full of old family movies, and details how much Swift adores spending time with her mom. It's especially good to listen to on Mother's Day if you're similarly spending the entire day alongside your mama.

"Hey Ma" by Chance The Rapper

This song was written as a thank you to Chance's mom for making it through all of his teenaged nonsense. Everyone go thank your mom for surviving your teenaged years. Seriously.

"The Wish" by Bruce Springsteen

Springsteen says in the song that he wrote this number for his mom. Add it to your Mother's Day playlist and show the important women in your life how much you likewise love, admire, and appreciate them.
