Alyssa Milano Defended Public Breastfeeding Again, Proving That She's Not Backing Down

by Jenn Rose

Don't call it a "mommy war," but Alyssa Milano and Wendy Williams disagree about breastfeeding. Milano stopped by The Wendy Williams Show on Wednesday to promote the Atkins diet, but she didn't spend long on the subject. Instead, she mostly spoke to Williams about her family, which includes 16-month-old Elizabella, whom Milano is breastfeeding. Williams brought up Milano's accidental role as a breastfeeding advocate, which has stemmed from her posting breastfeeding selfies on Instagram, to the chagrin of some of her fans, who find the pictures to be "way too much."

"I was surprised by the reaction," Milano said, according to People. "And I was surprised that I was then put in this position of being, like, a breastfeeding advocate." She was shocked that fans were so "opinionated about something that's supposed to be incredibly natural." Williams gingerly volunteered, "I'm opinionated." Milano, initially taken aback, asked Williams what upset her about the photo. "I don't need to see that," she replied.

And then the claws came out! Just kidding, the women actually discussed the issue like rational adults. Williams suggested that breastfeeding should be done in private, and Milano countered that adults aren't made to eat with a blanket over their heads. Milano asked why it's acceptable for Miley Cyrus to show off her breasts, but not her, and Williams explained that "breastfeeding is only for a particular amount of time; the rest of your life, breasts are sexual things." Milano disagreed; she felt that "biologically, they're not made for sexual things; that's what we've done to them."

Both fair points! But neither woman is a scientist. I'm not a scientist, either, for what it's worth, but I think it's safe to say that for some people, breasts are for feeding babies, for others, they're "sexual things," and for still others, they're both. That's fine! Use your breasts for whatever you want, I say – except as potholders. Never use your breasts as potholders.

The non-fight concluded with Williams conceding, "I know it's my issue," but witnessing breastfeeding makes her uncomfortable. She then changed the subject to another celebrity mom getting guff for an Instagram post: Coco, as in "Ice-T and," posted a pic of herself in a revealing dress on New Year's Eve, and fans took issue with this because she's a mother now.

"I don't have a problem with that," said Williams. "That's crazy that you don't," replied Milano. "Come on!" Williams continued, "I'd rather see this than breastfeeding." Milano, and the audience, were shocked. Williams went on to explain that she believes that women don't lose their sexuality once they become mothers, and Milano agreed.

And that was it! No yelling, no name calling, just two calm, adults laughing and smiling as they gently told each other, "I think your views are insane, but that's fine." It can be done. So maybe Williams won't follow Milano on Instagram, and maybe Milano won't be feeding her baby at Williams' house anytime soon. They're still friends; they just agreed to disagree.
