Are Nebulizers Covered By Insurance?

by Korey Lane

In these new, uncertain political times, it seems that the need to ensure that you and your family are protected no matter what is rising. And anxiety about health insurance, coverage, and the cost of medication are totally understandable as Republicans continue to try to attack the Affordable Care Act. Though for now, Americans remain safe with their health insurance, and access to care, there are still many questions about what such insurance actually covers. And if you or a member of your family has asthma or another respiratory disease, you might be wondering, are nebulizers covered by insurance? Usually, the answer is yes. But there are still some things you need to know.

Nebulizers, which are used as a treatment option for people with asthma or other breathing issues, can be expensive, costing upwards of $100. However, according to health experts, "many major health insurance providers will cover the cost of a nebulizer because they are medically necessary for patients with serious breathing troubles." But, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't check with your own insurance provider to make sure your device will be covered.

Whatever insurance you have, it's also crucial to get a prescription for your nebulizer from your doctor in order to have your insurance help pay for it.

For those who are on Medicare Part B insurance, the cost of a nebulizer is definitely covered as a "durable medical equipment" necessity. However, other insurers all have different policies, and covering nebulizers isn't mandated. If you don't have health insurance, or your insurance doesn't cover nebulizers, then there are other programs that may be able to help cover the cost of the device. The Partnership for Prescription Assistance is a company that actively works to help find assistance for Americans who need help covering the cost of medication or medical devices.

Basically, your insurance provider should cover at least a portion of the cost of your nebulizer, if it's prescribed by your doctor. But if it's still too expensive, or you don't have insurance, there are many other ways — like the ones mentioned above — to cover the cost of the equipment.

And while Congressional Republicans continue to devise an attack on health care, it's important to not stress too much about the ramifications of possible legislation. It's unlikely that a Republican health care bill will pass any time soon, especially given the initial "Trumpcare" bill's total failure. So, don't give up. Your equipment is likely covered, and will likely remain covered, at least for a while.
