Bruno Mars Honored Prince At The 2017 Grammys

by Kathleen Walsh

We lost a heartbreaking number of iconic musicians in 2016, and I can honestly say that Bruno Mars' tribute to Prince at the 2017 Grammys was just incredibly fun, beautiful, and perfect. The first tribute began with Adele and her rendition of George Michael's iconic song "Fast Love" which she actually had to restart after sound issues. "I'm sorry, I can't mess this up for him," she said, because she is perfection, and then everyone cried. The next tribute was a beautiful send off from Bruno Mars for the dearly departed Prince, who even now remains iconic. Even Beyoncé and Jay Z's daughter Blue Ivy was dressed in a pink tuxedo in his honor.

Where Adele's tribute to George Michael went the somber, traditional, emotionally gripping route, Mars went for something a little different in his tribute to Prince. He teamed up with the group The Time, to perform Prince classics "Let's Go Crazy" and "Jungle Love," all dressed in the performer's iconic style, purple tuxedos of course. There was no emotional slideshow, no false starts, and no tears. This was a fun, rousing, lively performance that for the creative genius that was Prince, was absolutely perfect. Mars had fun with it, which perfectly captured Prince's essence as a performer.

No one will ever come close to the creative brilliance that was Prince, but as a performer, I honestly can't imagine anyone more perfectly suited to honor him than Bruno Mars. Like Prince, Mars makes fun, funky music and is an extremely bendy and fun dancer. Mars is a consummate performer, giving his all in every thing he does, just as Prince was an incredible performer.

There were those who lamented the fact that there were no women on stage during this tribute, as, to be honest, Prince probably would have had some women in his band. That being said, at least it didn't make anybody cry this time. The final tribute of the night featured John Legend playing the piano and singing "God Only Knows" as only John Legend can, and then a list of all the people in the music industry who passed away in the past year. One thing is for sure, this has been a really rough year for the music industry.

If Prince could have seen his tribute, I hope he would have enjoyed it as much as I did. I like to think so, don't you?
