Can You Get Pregnant During Drunk Sex?

by Mishal Ali Zafar

There are so many types of sex, from make-up sex to pity sex, but while the type of sex you have is purely based on emotion, getting pregnant as a result of that sex is based on biology. (Just because you're hooking up with your ex doesn't mean you can't become pregnant with their child.) If you've had a few drinks, and decided to get your sexy on, you might be worried about your chances of conceiving. Can you get pregnant during drunk sex?

It's really important to know what exactly the process of getting pregnant entails. According to Planned Parenthood, pregnancy occurs when sperm cells swim through your cervix into your fallopian tubes and join with your egg, which can take up to six days. Once your egg is fertilized, it travels to the uterus, where it implants itself, which is when you become officially pregnant.

According to the American Pregnancy Association (APA), anytime a penis comes in contact with the vaginal area, in or around it, there is a chance of pregnancy, because even the tiniest bit of semen entering the vagina can lead to pregnancy. This is true, even if you are drunk.

Being drunk during the process of conception has no affect on the chances of pregnancy, noted Grace Shih, MD on Bedsider, and drinking could actually increase your chances of getting pregnant. You and your partner, while under the influence, could likely forget to use birth control options like condoms or the pill. Shih recommended using a long-term birth control option, like an IUD or birth control shot, if you are planning to live a party hearty lifestyle.

If you are trying to conceive, or think you might be pregnant, the APA advised that you stop drinking immediately, because any amount of alcohol during pregnancy can increase the chances of fetal alcohol syndrome.

Drunk sex can be lots of fun, but always remember to use protection if you don't want to get pregnant. Alcohol won't stop those swimmers from fertilizing your egg and one night of drunk, unprotected sex could lead to a solid nine months of sober pregnancy sex.
