Did Obama Reference 'Hamilton' Before His State Of The Union? It Would Be Pretty Epic

by Emily Glover

For the State of the Union, President Barack Obama is supposed to take stock of what's going on in the United States. In doing so, he may have realized that the latest breakout hit on Broadway is a little musical about our country's founding fathers. So, when one of Obama's tweets included a reference to Hamilton, people made the connection.

If you are not up with news from the Great White Way, Hamilton just opened in August to crazy good sales, which is kind of surprising, when you consider it's based on a biography of former (and first) Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton's life. (In other words, not the trendiest of all plots.) One of the biggest songs is called "One Last Time," in which the George Washington character croons such lyrics as, "One last time the people will hear from me. One last time. And if we get this right, we’re gonna teach ‘em how to say goodbye." It's not entirely clear Obama's reference to Hamilton was intentional, but many fans would like to think it was. After all, those lyrics are more than Obama could fit in a 140-character tweet, so just saying "One last time" got the point across pretty well, don't you think?

At least, everyone on the Internet thought so.

That, or he was referencing the Ariana Grande song, "One Last Time," which would also be epic in its own way. Because, really, maybe we're all reading a little bit too much into this.
