Dove's #RealMoms Video Proves All Moms Are "Good" Moms

by Casey Suglia

It seems like, since childhood, we've been told that "no one is perfect" — but sometimes, even as adults, its hard to believe, especially when society keeps telling you that you should be. It seems that "no one is perfect" is an even harder mantra to swallow once women become mothers and all they see are perfect moms portrayed on screen — from TV shows to the commercial breaks. But one company is trying to change that, and is more than ready to prove that all moms are "good" moms. Dove's #RealMoms video shows real moms doing real things, and shows that there is no one way to be a "good" mom.

In the video, which is just over a minute long, several moms are featured with their young children, telling their own story. They come from different backgrounds, have different jobs, and could be a stand-in for many moms who don't see themselves portrayed on TV, in movies, or on shiny social media feeds about "perfect" parenting. Some are stay at home moms, some are active, some moms have partners, and other moms choose to go at it alone — but at the end of the day, there is one thing that connects these women together: They're all real moms.

Their comments could also echo many mothers you may already know in your own life. "Everybody has ideas about what it means to be a good mom," one mom says. "And others feel like they have a license to tell you what it means to be a good mom."

If, like the women in the video, you're feeling the pressure to be a perfect mom, you're not alone. According to People, a 2017 survey of over 1,000 new moms conducted by Dove found that 9 out of 10 moms feel the pressure to be perfect. And according to The Daily Mail, 47 percent of moms cite images in the media as one of the biggest causes of pressure when it comes to parenting. But at the end of the day, according to Dove's survey, a majority of moms can agree that being perfect is unachievable — as only 26 percent of moms believe that being a perfect mom is an achievable goal. It's numbers like these that make this video and social campaign feel all the more important — real moms are out there, and they're willing to admit that they're not perfect. They're just not portrayed in the media as frequently as they should be.

The video itself actually acts as a clever advertisement for Dove Baby products, which the company just launched here in the United States. However, the video doesn't push the products to the forefront of the video and lets the moms do the talking. They're not selling body wash — they're too busy advocating for the idea that every mom is different, and it serves as an inspiration to all moms everywhere.

At the end of the video, the moms that are featured provide some great advice that everyone could take to heart: "You are the only expert in your kid," says mom, Elise. "Believe in yourself. Believe in your ability as a woman. What you can do is what you can do," mom Jazzie advises. "Do what fits your family and trust yourself," mom Cassidy adds.

Real words of advice from real moms. What more could anyone ask for?
