Gwen Stefani Would Feel "Blessed" If Her Son Were Gay & Her Comments Are Refreshingly Positive

by Laura Hankin

Gwen Stefani has a long history of being a cool mom to her three sons. First of all, she's freaking Gwen Stefani. Secondly, she's responded to criticism of her boys wearing nail polish by saying she wants them to express themselves regardless of gender norms. And now, in an interview with PrideSource, Stefani says she would feel "blessed" if her son were gay — a refreshingly positive viewpoint.

"I would be blessed with a gay son," she told the publication. "You know that I would feel blessed about that. I just want my boys to be happy and healthy." The singer has three boys, Kingston, Zuma, and Apollo, with ex-husband Gavin Rossdale. Stefani elaborated on her comment, saying:

I've been able to travel the world and meet so many different kinds of people. And it doesn't really matter if you're gay, straight, whatever. There are good and bad people, and I would be happy. I just want my kids to be happy, and whatever journey God gives them is their journey. I just need to be there to be the most supportive mom that I can be and that's what I'm gonna be. I always ask my gay friends, "OK, so what was it like when you were a little boy?" Because I do know that it's gotta be difficult to be the alternative, to not be the mainstream, or to be different, if you want to call it that. I feel like it's less and less (like that) these days, and it's hard for me to understand because it doesn't seem different or weird or anything anymore because it just seems so normal to me.

That's some excellent mom-talk, right there.

Stefani has been in the spotlight more than usual lately, first for a high-profile divorce from Rossdale, her husband of nearly 13 years, then because of a new romance with Blake Shelton, a fellow judge on The Voice. Now she's making headlines with the release of her solo album, This Is What The Truth Feels Like, in which she opens up about the divorce. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. It's the No Doubt lead singer's first No. 1 as a solo artist, so she's basically killing it right now.

Stefani's comments on her sons' sexuality bring to mind Adele's recent interview, in which she said she couldn't wait to know who her son's "boyfriend or girlfriend" would be. Hopefully, comments like these are just the beginning of a new wave of acceptance.

Now, in case you haven't already, you've got another reason to dig out that old No Doubt poster and put it back up on your wall.
