Hillary Clinton's Latest Health Care Tweet Is Brutal

by Korey Lane

So, it's pretty much a known fact that 2017 hasn't really gone the way anyone expected it to. After Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election via the electoral college, the country went into a state of shock. Since then, the Republican-controlled Congress, along with the Trump administration, has worked to push its agenda, perhaps most notably by attempting to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare. Its most recent bill, the American Health Care Act, does away with many Obama-era mandates, and is far from perfect. So far from perfect, in fact, that Hillary Clinton's response to the GOP's health care plan, while brutal AF, is completely warranted, one could argue.

Early Wednesday morning, the staffers behind the GOP Twitter account tweeted what they likely thought was a clever remark aimed at Clinton. The tweet quoted Clinton herself, speaking about the admitted faults in the ACA at a campaign event in which she said, "We've got to fix what's broken." "Where's your plan?" the GOP account sarcastically asked Clinton.

They probably weren't actually expecting an answer. But they got one.

Quoting the tweet, Clinton wrote, "Right here. Includes provisions like how not to kick 23 mil ppl off their coverage." She then attached a link to her own statement on health care, from her 2016 presidential run. "Feel free to run w/it," she quipped.

Well, damn, Hillary. Get it, girl.

As Republicans are painfully aware, their health care bill received a pretty terrible score from the bipartisan Congressional Budget Office. In regards to the AHCA, the CBO found that "in 2026, an estimated 51 million people under age 65 would be uninsured, compared with 28 million who would lack insurance that year under current law." The Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA), the Senate's version of the bill, has also received a negative outlook from the CBO, with the office estimating a total of around 22 million uninsured by 2026, as Clinton's tweet outlined. Numerous Republicans have stood up against the proposed plans, and support is wavering. But that doesn't mean the GOP is backing down.

Clinton, on the other hand, has a different kind of plan in mind, which she so graciously shared with the GOP. Under her plan, which she rolled out during the 2016 election, Clinton proposed making a "public option” possible, one which would allow government insurance agencies to compete with private companies. Her official stance added that Clinton supported "letting people over 55 years old buy into Medicare."

Sounds a little better than the current proposed replacement plan, right? If nothing else, Clinton's retort shows just how knowledgable and informed she is on the subject — a bit depressing when you compare that with the knowledge our current president reportedly holds on the same topic. Despite not holding any public office (currently, at least) or having any responsibilities in regards to the ongoing health care discussion, she is still ready to go with a plan.

Perhaps the GOP called out Clinton on Twitter to distract the public while its own health care fight implodes, perhaps not. That doesn't make Clinton's response any less perfect. And seriously, Republicans, if you wanna run with it, I think the public would be okay with that.
