How Gal Gadot Hid Her Pregnancy While Filming 'Wonder Woman'

by Kaitlin Kimont

It’s pretty much universally known at this point that the first female-led super hero flick Wonder Woman is the most badass film to come around in years. Not only because there are a bunch of fierce women kicking butt — both in the action-packed movie and at the box office — but what happened off camera is equally as impressive. Turns out the star of the film was expecting her second child during much of filming process and in a recent interview Gal Gadot revealed how she hid her pregnancy until her bump became impossible to cover up.

In an interview Marie Claire for its June 2017 cover story, the 32-year-old Israeli actress said she hid her pregnancy as long as she could because she “feared special treatment” and “advertising anything that could be considered weakness.” She opened up about how she managed to hide her morning sickness by vomiting “discreetly in corners” and how she handled her “hormone-induced migraines” by wearing sunglasses on set of the superhero film, which has since grossed nearly $290 million in the box office.

"I gutted it out. I started to come to set with sunglasses," Gadot explained in the Marie Claire interview. "I had this jug of water with huge pieces of ginger. One of the producers kept on asking, 'Why are you drinking that potato water?' They thought I'd gone Hollywood."

But, of course, there came a point when Gadot could not hide her pregnancy any longer and her growing bump would be revealed. And when that eventually happened, she still handled re-shoots and action scenes like a champ and the film crew came up with a plan to edit her belly out of the film in the post-production phase.

In an interview Entertainment Weekly earlier this week, Gadot explained that the film’s costume department had to cut “an ample triangle” from the front of her signature Wonder Woman suit and replaced it with a bright green cloth — a special effect detail only she and the film team would be able to notice.

“On close-up I looked very much like Wonder Woman,” the 32-year-old Israeli actress told Entertainment Weekly. “On wide shots I looked very funny, like Wonder Woman pregnant with Kermit the Frog.”

Patty Jenkins, the director of the film, told Entertainment Weekly that Gadot’s pregnancy didn't slow her down at all.

“She’s pregnant during part of the movie, in a suit out in a field in the freezing cold in others,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “There are so many things we asked her to do: Now do it on one foot. Now shout while you’re doing it. Now it’s raining in the freezing cold and you’ve lost your voice, go. Everyday it was a hilarious gauntlet and she would do it.”

Every day we learn a little more about Gadot and her impressive and inspiring ways. And this behind-the-scenes tidbit proves yet again that she's just as much Wonder Woman on-screen as she is off it.
