'American Gods' Will Immediately Draw You In

by Zakiya Jamal

Starz's new TV series already looks like it'll be a hit. Based on Neil Gailman's bestselling novel of the same name, American Gods follows protagonist Shadow Moon who's been recently released from prison after his wife Laura dies in an accident. Once released, he ends up working as a bodyguard for the mysterious Mr. Wednesday. As Shadow works alongside Mr. Wednesday, he discovers a whole network of gods and a gateway into a new world. The series premiere is on April 30, so many of you may be wondering how many episode is American Gods? The first season is only eight episodes long in total.

In the first season, fans will see Mr. Wednesday attempt to build a coalition of "Old Gods," to face off against the growing power of the "New Gods," like Technology and Media — since these are the things people worship in modern times. Mr. Wednesday hopes to reclaim some of the influence the Old Gods have lost with the help of Shadow, who has to come to grips with everything he learns.

It's unclear just how closely the show will follow the novel it's based on, but whether it strays from the source material or not, it definitely looks like the show will be interesting. Mixing reality with mysticism, as Shadow struggles to understand this new world, so will viewers. Just as Shadow finds himself questioning what is truly real, so will viewers. No doubt the show will include some major twists and mystery that will leave fans with even more questions.

Besides the amazing plot, the show also includes an incredible cast. The 100 star Ricky Whittle plays the role of Shadow and Emmy-nominated actor Ian McShane plays Mr. Wednesday. The cast also includes Emily Browning as Shadown's wife Laura, Oscar winner Cloris Leachman, Emmy and Tony winner Kristin Chenoweth, and Back to the Future alum Crispin Glover, just to name a few.

The show is also created by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, two of the biggest names in the business. Fuller is known for writing shows like Hannibal, Heroes, and various editions of Star Trek. Green also has an impressive resume and most recently wrote the film Logan, worked alongside Fuller to produce and write for Heroes, and also wrote for Smallville. It's no wonder why critics are already singing American Gods' praises.

Unsurprisingly, there's been no word yet on the odds of a second season, but if American Gods is as successful as critics believe it will be, there's no doubt fans can expect to see more of it in the future.

American Gods premieres on Sunday, April 30 at 9 p.m. ET on Starz.
