How Many Golden Globe Nominations Did Netflix Get? Not As Many As Was Expected

by Zakiya Jamal

Even though the Golden Globes will air on a primetime network, with each passing year more of the awards go to streaming sites like Netflix and Amazon Prime. This year Netflix released a lot of great shows, including old favorites like House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and Narcos as well as new shows like the highly anticipated Gilmore Girls revival, The Get Down, The Crown, and Stranger Things. So how many Golden Globe nominations did Netflix get? Fans may have walked away surprised by just how little the streaming service seemed to be recognized.

It was Netflix's new shows that actually brought in the awards for the streaming site. It's very popular period drama, The Crown, walked away with three nominations, including Best Television Series, Drama. Claire Foy, who played the role of a young Queen Elizabeth was also nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series, Drama. John Lithgow, who played the British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill also snagged a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series Made for Television. It's no surprise that the series, which was Netflix's most expensive project to date, did well with nominations. There's no doubt this is just the beginning of all the awards the show will rack in this awards season.

Netflix's new '80s sci-fi drama, Stranger Things, also brought in two nominations for Best Television Series, Drama, and Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series, Drama for Winona Ryder. The show will be going up against The Crown in both categories.

Although Stranger Things was a great show that was loved by fans, it's been known that sci-fi shows typically don't do well when it comes to awards. The fact that the show walked away with not one, but two nominations is pretty spectacular, especially since it's only the show's first season. However, some are still disappointed that Millie Bobby Brown, who played the young telepathic girl, Eleven, didn't snag a nomination as well.

So in total, Netflix only walked away with five nominations, with their popular go-to shows like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, surprisingly getting left out in the cold this year.
