While you’re debating whether to add that extra sugar to your coffee, the Food and Drug Administration found that one brand contains drugs that are similar to Viagra. Indeed, the agency announced earlier this week that AMPT Life LLC coffee products confirmed the presence of Sildenafil and Tadalafil — the active ingredient in the popular male enhancement drug — as well as “undeclared milk.” Because these substances can be dangerous — and life-threatening to those with severe milk allergies — when combined with other medications, it’s important to know if your coffee was recalled and what to do if it was.
Romper has reached out to AMPT Life LLC for comment regarding the recent recall and is awaiting a response. But, according to the FDA notice, the company is voluntarily recalling “all lots of AMPT Coffee to the consumer level.” The announcement continued:
These undeclared ingredients may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs, such as nitroglycerin, and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. Men with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates. In addition, people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.
AMPT Coffee — served instant and marketed as a "libido booster" — is only sold online and those who have purchased it should have notified of the recall via email. However, if you purchased this brand and the company hasn't reached out to you yet, you can figure out if yours is affected by looking for a red box with red packets that have black writing on them, which will contain the UPC 6942630912.
If you do indeed have this brand of coffee in your home, the FDA advises consumers to stop using it and discard of any remaining coffee. Additionally, customers can reach out to the customer by email at customerservice@amptcoffee.com with any other questions about the recall.
To date, the FDA reported that AMPT Life, LLC has not received any reports of injuries or illnesses.
As Food & Wine reported, AMPT Coffee is the third coffee product in the past year to be recalled for containing certain prescription drugs. According to the magazine, similar Viagra-like drugs were also found in Bestherbs Coffee products last month and in Caverflo Natural Herbal Coffee back in May.
