How To Make Breast Milk Popsicles

by Olivia Youngs

To say that breast milk is a magical substance isn't too far from the truth. Besides the endless nutritional benefits for babies, it is often held in high regard for it's healing properties that can sooth many of the woes of babyhood. There are several remedies on the market for lessening your baby's discomfort when they start teething, but what if I told you your own breast milk could work wonders for soothing teething pain as well? Many moms want to learn how to make breast milk popsicles in an effort to bring some added relief to their babies.

According to Fit Pregnancy, breast milk contains healing and soothing properties that can be used for many things other than teething pain, but in popsicle form, your baby reaps the nutritional and soothing benefits along with the cold, numbing sensation from the popsicle. Sounds like a magic formula to me too.

Making the popsicles is simple, and there are several ways to go about it. First, you'll need to express at least a few ounces of breast milk using a breast pump or your hands. Pump or express as you normally would and keep the milk in the fridge until you decide to popsicle it.

From there, you have a few different options. You can opt for convenience and purchase a few popsicle molds made specifically for breast milk like the Munchkin Click Lock Fresh Food Freezer Pops ($12) from Amazon which can save some time and effort and (of course) yield beautifully consistent breast milk pops. All you need to do is pour your expressed milk in the trays, put the lid on and freeze them until you need a "milk-sicle."

Another option is to make the popsicles without a mold — a tactic which requires a bit more creativity, but can definitely be done. As YouTuber Sami's Sweet Life shared in her video, you can use just about any container to make the popsicles. She used the lid of a bottle and placed a pacifier inside it to act as the handle. After freezing, the popsicle slides out and the pacifier holds it all in place while your baby soothes their sore gums.

Whatever route you decide to take, making breast milk popsicles is an easy and inexpensive way to sooth your baby's sore gums and let them reap the benefits of your magical breast milk.
