How To Make The Midnight Mint Mocha Frappuccino

by Olivia Youngs

Starbucks is on a roll with it's creative, frenzy-inducing frappuccinos. The trend started with the Unicorn Frappuccino, a multicolored, magical drink that broke the internet. Since then, a number of equally creative beverages have made their way to the world including the Mermaid Frappuccino and Dragon Frappuccino, to name a few. But a less colorful (though equally delicious) drink, the Midnight Mint Mocha Frappuccino, has recently stepped on the scene and is sure to make chocolate lovers go crazy. Learning how to make the Starbucks Midnight Mint Mocha Frappuccino can come in handy (and save you some money,) if you're a lover of all things chocolate.

This isn't your typical sweet drink. According to the Starbucks website, the Midnight Mint Mocha Frappuccino is made with dark cocoa, layers of whipped cream, and "mint sugar crystals." Like all good fraps, it's topped with whipped cream and then dusted with cocoa powder to finish it all off. The Washington Post indicated that this new drink is aimed at their Instagram audience, following the dark food trend, and is meant to mimic "dark starry nights, looking up at the sky with a cool summer breeze." Sounds like a dreamy drink, right?

Since it's so new to the menu, it tricky to know exactly what goes into their newest addition, but with a bit of creativity, you can blend up a Midnight Mint Mocha Frappuccino at home that rivals the real deal.

To start, you'll create a basic blended peppermint mocha. You should use dark chocolate to achieve the "midnight" look of the Midnight Mint Mocha Frappuccino, but if you prefer a less bitter beverage, milk chocolate is acceptable.

From there, you can DIY your own whipped cream (Starbuck's website noted their secret is vanilla syrup,) or just use the store bought kind.

From there it's a layering game. Fill your glass, mug, to-go cup, or whatever you choose to create your coffee magic, half way with your blended drink. Then add a few inches of whipped cream and fill it the rest of the way up with coffee.

The tricky part is mimicking the mint crystal, which is basically just mint-infused sugar, according to the Starbucks website. You can use mint flavor, mint leaves, or mint syrup and sprinkle the "crystals" on top of the whipped cream or wherever your heart desires.

For a drink that is meant to mimic the gothic food trend, it's surprisingly sweeter than you'd expect and the best part about making it at home? No waiting in line with crowds of other coffee drinkers. Just you and your homemade Midnight Mint Mocha Frappuccino.
