Here's How To Read Tammi Menendez's Book

by Zakiya Jamal

On Aug. 20, 1989, brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez killed both of their parents in their Beverly Hills mansion. Almost a year later, the brothers were arrested for the crimes and later sentenced to life in prison. They've spent the past 27 years behind bars and now ABC is presenting a new special titled Truth and Lies: The Menendez Brothers – American Sons, American Murderers, that will detail the murders as well as the men's lives in prison today. While imprisoned, both brothers fell in love and got married. In fact, Erik's wife, Tammi Menendez, even went on to write a book about her relationship with Erik. If you're interested, here's how to read Tammi Menendez's book, They Said We'd Never Make It - My Life with Erik Menendez.

The book was edited by Erik and self-published by Tammi back in October 2005 and is no longer in print. However you can still find copies on Amazon, through third-party sellers. New versions of the book go for $9, but you can find a used copy of the book for as cheap as $3.79, not including shipping.

The description of the book doesn't give much insight into what exactly the book is about. All it says is, "This biography by Tammi Menendez describes her life with Erik Menendez." However, the book is a total of 247 pages in length, so it most likely includes personal details about how the couple met, fell in love, and what led Tammi to decide to marry Erik despite the fact that he'll be in jail for the rest of his life.

Tammi and Erik married in June 1999 when Erik was 28 years old and Tammi was 37 years old. The service took place in a prison waiting room. Tammi was previously married and has a daughter with her first husband, who committed suicide. According to an interview she did with People magazine back in 2005, Tammi and her daughter use the weekends to travel the 150 miles to visit Erik who Tammi's daughter refers to as her "Earth Dad." In the same article Erik credited Tammi for helping him get through life in prison.

You can learn more about Lyle and Erik Menendez's crimes and their lives in prison in Truth and Lies: The Menendez Brothers – American Sons, American Murderers, which will air at 9 p.m. ET on Jan. 5 on ABC.
