Little Live Pets Lil Frog Toys Have Been Recalled

It seems like it happens all the time, yet it never gets less annoying: a toy recall. Moose Toys announced its Little Live Pets Lil Frog Toy is being recalled because of problems with its batteries. For those whose child owns one of these toys, here's how to tell if your Little Live Pets Lil Frog Toy has been recalled.

The toy is part of Moose Toys (Red Planet Group in Canada). The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission states that "when the button batteries are removed from the toy frogs, the battery’s cap can become a projectile and the battery’s chemicals can leak, posing chemical and injury hazards."

If that sounds scary, it is: two incidents of battery chemicals getting into kids' eyes from the frog resulted in doctor's visits. Yikes. Getting chemicals in the eye can damage the cornea, which is why it's important that parents pay attention to this recall.

Today's Parent said that Moose Toys reported that 17 similar incidents have occurred in the United States. No incidents were reported in Canada, but the recall is effective there as well as a precaution. More than 400,000 toys are being recalled, CNN reported.

The fun toys "hop" around and are sold in blue, pink, and green. Not every toy in the Lil Frog series of the Little Live Pets line is part of the recall. The Lil Frog Single Pack is one of the products being recalled, which has a manufacturer's code SKU 28217. The way to tell if your child's toy is one of the affected ones is to go by the dates the recalled product was manufactured. The affected date codes for the Lil Frog Single Pack are WS113416 to WS122516

The other product being recalled is the Lil Frog Lily Pad, which has the SKU 28218. The date codes impacted range from WS112016 to WS123216.

CNN reported that the affected toys were sold at Target, Toys "R" Us, Walmart, Amazon.com, and through military exchanges from August 2016 until February 2017.

Although the number of toy recalls has decreased in recent years, defective children's products have received quite a bit of press lately thanks to cursing, stillborn Hatchimals and moldy Sophie the Giraffe toys.

For those who don't want to take a child's beloved toy away from them forever or are worried about having to cough up money to get a new one, Red Planet Group is offering free replacements for the affected Little Live Pet products.

For those of you who may own another toy in the series and are worried they may be affected, rest assured that it's safe for your child to continue playing. "This has absolutely nothing to do with any other Little Live pets items that are in the marketplace," a spokesperson for Red Planet Group told Romper.
