South Shore Dressers Recalled For A Troubling Reason

If you've bought any bedroom furniture from Wayfair, WalMart, Amazon, or Toys 'R' Us in the past few years, you might want to check and make sure that it's not part of the latest recall. Furniture company South Shore recently recalled its 5-drawer dresser for potential hazards, and parents will definitely want to know if their dresser was one of those affected. Obviously, it's a nightmarish thought that your child could be injured by a heavy piece of furniture, especially something as substantial as a chest of drawers. But so far, it seems as that the recall is more focused on prevention, rather than in response to any tragedy.

Romper has reached out to South Shore Furniture for comment and is awaiting a reply.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the South Shore Summer Breeze 5-drawer chests could pose serious tipping and possible entrapment hazards if not anchored to the wall. If the chest were to fall over and land on a child, this could result in grievous injury or death. The CPSC also noted that these chests of drawers do not comply with U.S. voluntary industry safety standards. While no injury has been reported as a result of the recall, South Shore Furniture recommends on its website:

Consumers should immediately stop using any recalled chest that is not properly anchored to the wall and place it into an area that children cannot access.

Approximately 68,000 chests of drawers were included in the South Shore recall, 3,700 of which were sold in January of this year.

As mentioned, the recalled dressers were sold online at retailers like Wayfair, WalMart, Amazon, and Toys 'R' Us between February 2005 and December 2016, selling for $160 per unit. To find out if your dresser was one of those recalled, check for model numbers 3746035, 3294035, 3219035, and 3210035. Dressers were sold in four colors: royal cherry, chocolate, blueberry, or white. The chests measure 44-inches high by 31-inches wide and 16-inches deep and weigh 88 pounds.

If you have one of the recalled dressers, contact South Shore Furniture either for a full refund or a free tip-over restraint kit. If you're unsure how exactly to install the tip-over restraint kit, South Shore is offering customers a one-time in-home installation service. You can email South Shore at service@southshorefurniture.com or contact customer service at (800) 290-0465.
