Is Jyn Erso Rey’s Mom? Twitter Has A Theory About The 'Rogue One' Hero

by Jenn Rose

Within minutes of on Good Morning America's Thursday premiere of the first trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, fans were dissecting every second of it, trying to parse clues about the new movie, and the franchise in general. This should come as no surprise; it's what nerds live for. And the prevailing theory is, could Jyn Erso be Rey's mother? The answer, of course, is who really knows.

While the filmmakers have assured fans that we will eventually learn who Rey's parents are, and that the answer will be satisfying, they won't be giving it up any time soon. That being said, speculating is fun. Think of all those Lost fans who insisted for years that the island was Purgatory, even after the show's creators swore up and down that it wasn't. And then, it turned out that it was, and all those fans won gold medals for being the best TV-watchers ever. OK, fine, if they won anything at all, it was probably a drink or $10 from a friend they made a bet with. But it's not about the prize; it's about the glory. Jyn being Rey's mom might be a little out-there, but tell that to everyone who just knew that Ted and Robin from How I Met Your Mother would end up together eventually, titular mother be damned. Take a look at some of the more compelling arguments:

Alright, fine, maybe that's not too compelling. What about this?

Yes, Rey's accent is the same excuse that fans used to claim that she was Obi-Wan's granddaughter or niece or whatever. And yes, actresses Daisy Ridley and Felicity Jones are actually both British in real life. But just like there are many different American accents, there are many different British accents, and Ridley was instructed to speak in a different accent than her own when playing Rey. And it sounds a lot like Jyn's...

I'm not fighting! I mean, she definitely isn't Admiral Ackbar's kid (rest in peace, Erik Bauersfeld).

Now this one, I will fight. I can see Jyn being the mom, but I can't imagine Luke breaking the Jedi code, abandoning his kid, or having a one night stand, so that's out. To be honest, I can't even imagine Luke having sex at all. I think of him like his actions figures; all smooth and blank down there. Next!

The prosecution rests. Jyn is Rey's mom. Unless, of course, she dies at the end of Rogue One. Either way, I'm sure we'll find out by the end of Episode IX, scheduled for 2019.
