Lyle Menendez Has A Complicated Love Life

by Chrissy Bobic

If you find it hard to believe that prison inmates serving life sentences for murder can find love behind bars, then you'll likely find it even more impossible that Lyle Menendez has found it more than once. But is Lyle Menendez married? The convicted killer has actually tied the knot twice since being convicted in 1996 of murdering his parents with his brother, Erik.

Lyle, now 48 years old and serving his life sentence at Mule Creek State Prison in California, married ex-model Anna Erikkson shortly after he was convicted. However, their love was not to last. After hearing that he'd been writing to another woman, effectively "cheating" on her, Erikkson divorced Lyle in 2001 and he ended up remarrying soon after. This time, it was to Rebecca Sneed in 2003, who would later become an attorney. In fact, according to Menendez Brothers: The Bad Sons, which was part of Barbara Walters Presents American Scandals, Sneed later worked with Erik's wife, Tammi Menendez, on prison reform. So, it's like they embarked on double dates without their husbands present.

After being convicted of murdering their parents and getting served with life sentences each, the Menendez brothers have served their time in separate prisons and have reportedly had no contact other than through letters and through playing chess via the mail, one move at a time.

But let's back up to Lyle's relationship with wife No. 1 for a minute. As to be expected, Erikkson's initial attraction to Lyle was born when she watched the first televised trial of him and his brother in 1993. According to People magazine, Erikkson said, while watching the TV coverage of the brothers' trial, "I was watching the lawyers thanking people for all these letters of support Erik got. I thought to myself, 'What about Lyle?'" So she sent a short letter to the convicted killer, got a "thank you" note in return, and decided that their blossoming correspondence was enough to move to L.A. from her home in Colorado.

Much like Erik's wife, Erikkson was never deterred by the "no conjugal visit" rule upheld in California for inmates who are serving life sentences. According to People, having a mental and emotional connection with Lyle had been enough for her. But in 2001, it was apparently a no-go for Lyle to be corresponding via letters to another woman, and the couple divorced. Two years later, he married Sneed in the prison visiting room, surrounded by friends and family of the bride. Sneed, a former magazine editor, is now an attorney and apparently, they are still together.

The lives and convictions of both Lyle and Erik will be revisited in the upcoming ABC documentary Truth and Lies: The Menéndez Brothers — American Sons, American Murderers, which will air on Jan. 5.
