Is Meggy Up To Something On 'How To Get Away With Murder'? She's Too Good To Be True

On a show like How To Get Away With Murder, outsiders are not to be trusted. The main group of characters have gone through so much together and become so isolated that anyone outside the bubble immediately raises suspicions. This includes Wes' brand new girlfriend, a med student improbably named Meggy whose bubbly presence is at odds with the rest of the show. She may be cute, but she's also super suspicious. Where did she come from? How did she get so close to Wes so fast? Is Meggy up to something?

It makes sense that Wes would seek connections outside of the group considering the tough time he had last year and the frequent betrayals he's suffered at the hands of those closest to him. Meggy is definitely the opposite of everyone else he knows: she's upbeat, she hugs, she's (seemingly) upfront about her feelings. But is she everything she seems? The most unsettling thing about Meggy is that under any other circumstances she'd be pretty normal but when compared to the rest of the Keating Five, she seriously stands out. The biggest hint that she may be up to something nefarious is that there haven't been any hints at all.

There are a lot of good things about Meggy. She seems happy and responsible. She's immediately welcoming of Wes' friends, and apparently a background check didn't turn up a dark past. She has some curiosity about Annalise, but that's not out of the ordinary; Annalise tends to draw a lot of attention and she's a big part of Wes' life, so it makes sense for Meggy to be interested in her. Meggy may be guilty of some snooping when she looked through Wes' wallet to find out his birthday, but that's not even on Oliver levels of digging for information and everyone still trusts him. If she is who she seems, then she could be good for Wes. He's in need of some normalcy after the life he's had.

Actress Karla Souza said as much to Us Weekly when talking about the new season. "I think [Wes is] just in need of feeling comfort and someone that's not involved in all of this and also feeling normal again," she said. "With any of us, the murder and everything we've done is in his head, whereas if he's with someone who has never know about any of that, he's suddenly normal."

But then why does Meggy feel so out of place? The story must be building towards something, and Meggy may be a part of that. Audiences don't know much about her so there is always the possibility that she's not actually who she says she is. In that case, the potential of her betraying Wes' trust is a lot more drama-generating than if she was just a well-meaning med student who doesn't like ice cream. In a show where no one is who they say they are, then there's a good chance Meggy is hiding something too.
