Sasha & 'TWD' May Be Parting Ways

by Megan Walsh

Things don't look good for Sasha on The Walking Dead. After launching a suicide mission into the depths of the Sanctuary in a hopeless bid to try and take out Negan on her own, Sasha ended up in a cell just like Daryl did all those weeks ago. She didn't complete her mission and it doesn't seem like she will any time soon. Trapped behind enemy lines with little hope of rescue or escape, Sasha might not make it out of Season 7 alive. Is Sasha returning for The Walking Dead Season 8?

While nothing has been officially confirmed, it does seem likely that Sasha might not be back next season. A big part of the reason she seems to be nearing the end of her time on the show is that actress Sonequa Martin-Green just landed the lead in a brand new show. She'll be starring in Star Trek: Discovery on CBS All Access, and scheduling could prevent her from doing both shows at once. However, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Scott Gimple seemed hopeful about her future with the show.

"Sonequa Martin-Green can do anything," he said. "I've seen her battle a horde of walkers this year while simultaneously battling a stomach flu that would have had most people crying in the dirt. She can fulfill the duties of a Lieutenant Commander on a Constitution-class starship whilst battling walkers, Saviors, and whatever gets in Sasha's way. We've had to juggle before. I will certainly juggle for Star Trek any day of the week. Okay, maybe not on Sunday."

Gimple certainly made it seem like balancing both shows wouldn't be a problem, though it still wasn't an official confirmation that Sasha would be around for Season 8. In the same interview, Martin-Green was even less forthcoming about Sasha's fate or her availability for both shows. "Well, I can't say anything," she said. "I can say that the story is as impactful and powerful and dynamic as it always has been, and there's nothing to worry about where that's concerned."

There could be no cause for concern because Martin-Green could fit both shows into her schedule — but it could also mean that her time on The Walking Dead ends with Season 7, leaving her free to take on another project. The cast and crew of the show aren't going to be free with spoilers, so there's no way of knowing if they're being misleading or not with their statements.

Sasha could survive the dire situation she's currently in (she's made it through worse, and characters have been able to escape from the Sanctuary before), but there's also a good chance that she won't. Right now her fate is up in the air.
