The Reverend Has Lost His Power On 'Kimmy Schmidt'

Season 3 spoilers ahead! I know that Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne, played by the incomparable Jon Hamm, is supposed to be the most vile character on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, but I can’t be the only one who just loves to hate him during every one of his scenes. So when Jon Hamm returned to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 3 and was the same overly confident but all-around creeper that we all remember, it was pretty amazing. It also made me wish for some in-depth scenes of the reverend in prison. But more than anything, Hamm’s return to Season 3 of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt made it possible for Kimmy to get a leg up on him once and for all.

At first, all of the phone pranks that she and Jacqueline were playing on him seemed like the perfect way to get back at him, but it really goes deeper than that. Kimmy pointed out that the reverend himself is the one who claimed that women are stupid, so she (in turn) couldn't possibly understand how to sign their divorce papers. It was an empowering moment for her for sure. Not only was she finally gaining the upper hand on the man who had controlled pretty much every aspect of her life for years, but she was facing him head on (well, through the phone anyway) instead of just signing the papers and being done with it. The reverend is just all-around awful, but the fact that Hamm was able to return to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to play him made it possible for Kimmy’s healing from her time in the bunker to continue.

But like I said, I wouldn’t say no to some wacky spin-off with the reverend's in jail. Need I remind anyone that, according to him, his prison nickname is Rude Dude? One of the first things he said to Kimmy on the phone was that since he had to become part of both a white power and a muslim gang, he had a “Mrs. Doubtfire situation” going on that he had to keep up with. I mean, I know we’re supposed to hate him and I do, but I also can’t get enough of him. Probably because he’s played by Hamm.

But it turns out that somehow, he and Kimmy are really married and if she’s not going to be signing those divorce papers anytime soon, then chances are, Hamm will be making more appearances throughout Season 3. And if that’s the case, then it will also allow for more opportunities for Kimmy to be the one in control, and that’s kind of the best part.
