Miley Cyrus' Throwback VMA Instagram Is Hilarious

The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards have practically cemented themselves in history. It was the year that not only reunited legendary boyband NSync, but it gave us one of the most unforgettable musical performances of all time with Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke taking the stage to perform "We Can't Stop" and "Blurred Lines." There is so much to be said about that performance, but four years later, Cyrus' throwback VMA Instagram posted to her account on Sunday says it all.

If you've completely wiped that 2013 performance from your brain, I don't blame you (but the performance is conveniently on YouTube if you want to refresh your memory). The performance introduced the world to a lot of things — flesh colored latex bikinis, dancing bears, Cyrus' tongue, and twerking — and left the VMA crowd (and the rest of the world, for that matter) speechless. The performance didn't go over too well at the time (CNN described it as outrageous) but Cyrus defended it to the New York Times two years after the fact. "I can't believe that it was a big deal," Cyrus said. "It wasn't shocking at all."

It's unclear whether or not Cyrus has had a change of heart about the performance in the two years since talking to the New York Times, but it is clear that Cyrus has changed a little (if that's not clear by the sounds of her new song "Malibu"). Cyrus shared a photo of that iconic performance to her Instagram account on Sunday (before performing at the VMAs) with her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, superimposed in the background, watching over her. "Sorry dad...I'll be good tonight I promise..," Cyrus captioned the photo.

The next time I go to make a bad decision, I too, will think of Billy Ray Cyrus judging me. Even though the photo is the most hilarious thing you might see all day, it does bring up something incredibly exciting — Miley is performing at the VMAs again tonight (and she's nominated for an award, too).

Her performance will definitely be unforgettable in its own right, if only based on the rumors about it alone. According to NME, Cyrus has hired an 85-year-old drag queen to perform on stage with her and there may or may not be a puppet show involved in part of the performance, according to Page Six. But unlike her 2013 performance, this performance will get a more positive reaction from the crowd. "Everyone who saw the rehearsal got emotional and some people even got teary-eyed," a source told People about the performance.

No one knows what will happen with Cyrus' performance tonight. Although judging by her Instagram on Sunday, it is evident that Cyrus will be on her best behavior with Billy Ray watching.
