Raven Gates Is Heartbroken Over 'Bachelor In Paradise'

by Megan Walsh

Production on Bachelor in Paradise was recently halted due to allegations of sexual misconduct and it appears Season 4 of the show is cancelled while the situation is more thoroughly investigated. Though most of the details emerging about what happened are secondhand and technically unconfirmed, it is being reported that a female contestant on the show was too inebriated to consent to sexual activity and the producers let the situation unfold on camera without intervening. Once a third party complaint was filed by one of the producers, all of the contestants were sent home. Many of them have made vague comments on social media expressing their disappointment, but Raven Gates' response to Bachelor in Paradise earned a lot of criticism from fans.

Update: In a statement to Romper, Warner Bros. said, "We have become aware of allegations of misconduct on the set of Bachelor in Paradise in Mexico. We have suspended production and we are conducting a thorough investigation of these allegations. Once the investigation is complete, we will take appropriate responsive action."

Raven tweeted that she was "heartbroken" about Bachelor in Paradise, which led to mixed reactions from users on Twitter. Some interpreted her as being unhappy about the cancellation and more concerned about losing her shot at a reality TV career as opposed to the serious issue at hand. Raven insisted that she was heartbroken about "what happened at BIP," which one could assume is a reference to the alleged sexual misconduct.

Some Twitter users also accused Raven of not being supportive enough of the female contestant involved, to which Raven said, "We're worried about the TWO people involved. Not just one. Not just about ourselves."

Raven seemed to be understandably bothered by the insinuations that her concern was selfishly motivated, which led to a few tense exchanges. She specified that she was not trying to make the situation about her, but was unhappy about everything that happened. "Sum1 [sic] accusing me that I dont [sic] care bout [sic] my friends being in a huge sexual assault case.. &me [sic] calling them deranged in their thinking is mean?" she wrote in response to Twitter user Andreeababy1, with both later agreeing that the tension of the situation was "bringing out the worst in people."

It seems like much of the negative fan response to Raven's initial comment stems from her Twitter likes. She did like tweets that describe the female contestant involved as "forward," as well as references to "false allegations" and "fake news." If those likes do reflect Raven's real opinions, then it makes sense for people to be bothered by it – it's reeks of victim blaming. But Raven did insist that she was upset about what happened, even as she encouraged people not to judge or jump to conclusions.

It's possible that Raven is not being more explicit in her support for those involved in an effort to protect their privacy, or because she can't legally comment in less vague terms. All one can go off is her word, and Raven says that she is heartbroken over what happened.
