Reactions To Katy Perry's VMAs Performance Sum Up The Night Perfectly

The 2017 MTV VMAs were truly out of this world, sending our last remnants of summer into the atmosphere. Say goodbye to the iconic "Moonman" award statue — it's the "Moon Person" now. And at the helm of music fans' interstellar voyage is none other than pop superstar Katy Perry, who both hosted and performed at Sunday night's awards. Perry herself was up for five VMAs for three songs, including her most recent single, "Bon Appétit." People were pretty damn into Katy Perry's VMAs performance, when the 27-year-old singer took the stage to perform "Swish Swish," featuring Nicki Minaj, probably (read: definitely) because the majority of us were wondering if there would be a shameless Taylor Swift dig during the performance.

Originally, Perry was reportedly scheduled to perform a "medley" but that changed, and she only performed her latest single, "Swish Swish," instead. Twitter, of course, took notice, and a few fans were wondering what the reason was behind the change. Perhaps it had something to do with Taylor Swift's newly-released music video for her new single, "Look What You Made Me Do"? After all, fans of both Swift and Perry are convinced the song is at least partially about the ongoing feud between the two superstars.

Perry was dressed as a basketball, and at one point hung from the ceiling and shot baskets mid-performance. As you can imagine, Twitter had some feelings:

Perry was nominated for five VMAs for three songs: April's deliciously sinister "Bon Appétit" for Best Art Direction, "Feels," for Best Collaboration with Calvin Harris, Pharrell Williams, and Big Sean, and three solid nominations for "Chained to the Rhythm," including Best Pop, Best Direction, and Best Visual Effects. Perry hasn't won a VMA since 2014's Best Female Video for "Dark Horse."

On Thursday, Perry released her video for "Swish Swish" ahead of Taylor Swift's new single, "Look What You Made Me Do." The video release from Perry came as a surprise after Swift had cryptically hinted all last week at releasing a new album, which fans now know will be called Reputation and drops in November. This was of course after Swift ended her three-year boycott of Spotify on the day Perry's latest album, Witness, dropped. No wonder fans suspected there might be some sort of showdown at the VMAs.

Even though this is Perry's first time hosting the VMAs, MTV wasn't kidding when it promoted the event with the tagline, "Brace for impact" — because Perry has certainly left an impression on Sunday night with her VMA performance.
