The 'Hairspray Live!' Cast On NBC Is Full Of A-List Stars

Welcome to the '60s! Hairspray Live! is almost here and it's about time to meet the nicest kids in town. The new NBC live musical event with be filled with music, dancing, and a star-studded cast. The cast includes a Grammy nominated singer, an Oscar winner, a Tony winner, and an Emmy-winning actress and Emmy-nominated actor, just to give you an idea of how amazing this musical will be. With this many A-list stars, the Hairspray Live! cast on NBC is sure to be a production you won't want to miss and you better catch it live. People are definitely going to be talking about it the next day.

Hairspray first began as a movie back in 1988 and then became a Broadway musical in 2002 before being turned into yet another film in 2007. Now NBC is bringing this musical to television in the new live production. The musical follows the story of Tracy Turnblad who lives in 1960s Baltimore and desperately wants to join the popular local dance show, The Corny Collins Show. She, along with her best friend, Penny, go to the auditions for the show, which starts a whirlwind adventure for Tracy, changing her life forever.

You can watch Hairspray Live! on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC, but before you do, check out the list of A-list stars below that are set to appear in the musical and possibly make it the best production to date.

Kristin Chenoweth

The Tony award-winning actress will play the role of Velma Von Tussle, also known as Miss Baltimore Crabs.

Dove Cameron

The Disney Channel star will play the younger Von Tussle, Amber. Cameron and Chenoweth also played mother and daughter in the Disney Channel film, Descendants.

Ariana Grande

The Grammy-nominated singer plays Tracy's socially awkward best friend, Penny Pingleton.

Derek Hough

The Dancing with the Stars pro will play Corny Collins, the host of the popular TV show Tracy wants to join.

Sean Hayes

Hayes will take on the part of Mr. Pinky, who owns Mr. Pinky's Hefty Hideaway, an integrated women's clothing boutique, and wants Tracy to be his spokesperson.

Jennifer Hudson

The Oscar-winning actress plays Motormouth Maybelle, who hosts Negro Day on The Corny Collins Show and is the mother of Seaweed and Little Inez.

Andrea Martin

Martin, who's well known for her role in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, will play Penny's very religious and highly controlling mother, Prudy Pingleton. She also does not approve of her daughter's eventual biracial romance with Seaweed Stubbs.

Harvey Fierstein

The Emmy-nominated star will once again reprise the role of Tracy's mother, Edna Turnblad, who worries about her own weight and fears for Tracy when she starts being noticed. Fun fact: Fierstein took home a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Edna in the Broadway production.

Martin Short

Short will bring his comedic genius to Hairspray Live! as Tracy's dad, Wilbur, who runs the local joke shop.

Ricki Lake

Lake, who played Tracy in the original film, with also appear in the musical as an unnamed character. It won't be a big part, but the cameo should be fun nonetheless.

Rosie O'Donnell

The Emmy award-winning actress and comedian has been cast as the Gym Teacher in the musical.

Like I said, the cast if pretty much overflowing with A-list talent, so you better cancel all of your other plans for Wednesday, Dec. 7. Because this production is definitely gong to be a must-see affair.
