What Happened To Harold & Jean From 'Freaks And Geeks'?

Freaks and Geeks was a television show that was cancelled too soon. From the early masterminds of Paul Feig and Judd Apatow, the teen dramedy followed (obviously) the freaks and the geeks of Chippewa, Michigan — a suburb of Detroit full of plenty of worthy characters. Though the series main characters were undoubtedly Lindsay Weir and her younger brother Sam, it's hard to forget about Harold and Jean, the parents and heads of the Weir family. After only 12 episodes, the show was cancelled, leaving fans wondering, what happened to Harold & Jean from Freaks and Geeks?

Harold Weir, played by Joe Flaherty, was a stern and strict father at the head of the Weir household, but he was a loving father who just wanted what was best for his kids. He worked hard to support his family by running his sporting goods store, and could usually be found at the dinner table lecturing (and occasionally yelling) about bad role models, and doling out a handful of intense punishments.

Flaherty certainly didn't have any trouble finding a job after Freaks and Geeks was cancelled. With more than 40 credited roles attributed to Flaherty as an actor after his Freaks and Geeks engagement, Flaherty found mild success playing the character of Father McAndrew on the sitcom The King of Queens, and has had cameos on a countless number of your favorite television shows. But his most famed role, arguably, was one that came before his stint on Freaks and Geeks, as a writer and performer on Second City TV, a televised improv sketch show that starred other comedy greats such as Eugene Levy, John Candy, Catherine O'Hara, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis, and more. Flaherty has seemingly taken a break from the world of writing and acting since 2014 — and who can blame him after a successful run in the business?

Jean Weir, played by Becky Ann Baker, was the softer side of the Weir couple. An adoring homemaker, you could always find Jean making nutritious meals for her family, trying to give her kids helpful advice, and being just a wee bit ignorant to the reality that her children were facing as high schoolers.

Since the demise of Freaks and Geeks, Baker has appeared in a number of bit roles in some of your favorite television shows such as Sex and the City, Elementary, and The Good Wife. More recently, Baker has found staying power on screen in her role as Loreen Horvath (mother of Hannah Horvath) on the HBO sitcom Girls. Though Girls and Freaks and Geeks are set decades apart, Baker finds herself in the role of a loving mother who could use a bit more appreciation, and a little more street smarts, once again.
