What Powers Does 'Luke Cage' Have? This Marvel Character Is Literally Unbreakable

After Luke Cage was introduced in Jessica Jones we all knew it was only a matter of time before he got his own show. Although Jessica Jones was great for a lot of reasons Mike Colter as Luke Cage really brought a lot to the show. Jessica and Luke first bonded over the fact that they both have powers but what is Luke Cage's power? Luke's power is simple; he's unbreakable. No matter what you throw at him or shoot at him, Luke's skin will not break. Now, as we saw in Jessica Jones, that doesn't necessarily mean Luke can't be hurt, it just takes a bit more work to do so.

Although Luke Cage creator and showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker told Decider his intent was never to make the show overtly politically there's a lot to be said about a black man who can withstand multiple bullet wounds. With the Black Lives Matter movement at the forefront of many Americans' minds, the constant discussion about police brutality, and the upcoming election Luke Cage is premiering at a tenuous time. Though Coker didn't want to attach too much political meaning to the project he did admit that the decision to put Luke Cage in a hoodie was a subtle tribute to Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old boy who was fatally shot by George Zimmerman in 2012.

Luke Cage isn't a new character and his story has been heard before in the Marvel comics. However, Luke Cage's story seems to always coincide with what's going on in black America at the time. The Luke Cage comics were first created in the '70s, shortly after "Blaxploitation" films, movies that were made specifically for Black audiences and seen by many as exploitative, became popular. Similarly, when the comics was relaunched in the '90s they took place mostly in Chicago, during a time when there was a big move by law enforcement to rid Chicago of gangs, including the notorious Gangster Disciples, which was run by kingpin Larry Hoover.

Whether or not Luke Cage is meant to be a political statement he's always been made into one and this new show will be no different. Having a show about a black superhero that also takes place in a black neighborhood with a black cast, writers, and directors is definitely noteworthy. Prepare yourself for the various think pieces that will come from this show and make sure to watch Luke Cage when it premieres on Netflix on Sept. 30. Trust me, everyone will be talking about it.
