What Ties Does Trump's Daughter-In-Law Have To The Clinton Email Scandal? It's Weird

by Abby Norman

On Oct. 24, Eric Trump's wife Lana hinted at a so-called "October surprise" regarding Hillary Clinton's emails when she was interviewed on Fox and Friends. She then told WABC radio she believes Trump forced the FBI to reexamine the emails, which she called the "nail in the coffin" of Clinton's campaign. That's a lot of talk, but what ties does Trump's daughter-in-law actually have to the Clinton email scandal outside of just having an opinion about it?

Just when it seemed like Clinton's emails would finally be out of the headlines, with just a week to go before the election, FBI Director James Comey announced the FBI was looking into new evidence that was relevant to the Clinton email investigation in light of a simultaneous investigation into Anthony Weiner. Weiner, who is being investigated regarding alleged sexting, is the ex-husband of Clinton's top aid, Huma Abedin.

Comey explained to Congress in a letter last week that the case into Clinton's email server needed to be reevaluated because, while investigators were reviewing a computer once shared by Weiner and Abedin, the FBI uncovered emails that "appear to be pertinent" to the investigation of Clinton. Several political leaders in the Senate and the Department of Justice have come out against Comey's call for reevaluating the case in light of this evidence, and demanded that he update his previous testimony to Congress that determined the case was closed.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump seemed to take the FBI's reopening of the case personally when he "thanked" Abedin and Weiner at a rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Monday. "We can be sure that what is in those emails is absolutely devastating," Trump added, despite the fact that the content of the emails has yet to be released and the FBI's investigation into whether they're even relevant to Clinton is still underway.

When Trump's middle son Eric appeared with his wife on Fox and Friends last week, Lara hinted that Trump may have been preparing to release something that could derail Clinton's campaign: "Well there's still a couple days left in October. We've got some stuff up our sleeve," Lara said, according to The Daily Mail.

After Comey released his letter to Congress explaining the FBI's intention to reopen the case into Clinton's email server, Lara claimed in an interview with WABC's Rita Cosby that Trump deserved some credit for the decision, according to The Hill:

I think my father-in-law forced their hand in this. You know, he has been the one since the beginning saying that she shouldn't be able to run for president, and I commend him on that. And I think if he had not put that pressure on, I don't even know if we would be seeing this happening right now. I just think she's had a big problem on her hands, and this is going to be, you know, the nail in the coffin as far as I'm concerned.
