Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from longtime partner Brad Pitt after an apparent disagreement over the children. Jolie is asking for full physical custody of the couple's six children, suggesting Pitt get visitation rights and joint legal custody only. Jolie's representative and high-profile divorce attorney Laura Wasser said Jolie is not asking for spousal support.

"This decision was made for the health of the family. She will not be commenting, and asks that the family be given its privacy at this time," Jolie's attorney Robert Offer said in the statement.

In a statement to People, Pitt echoed Jolie's statements and said he was mostly concerned about the kids:

I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well being of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time.

Romper has reached out to both Jolie's and Pitt's representatives for further comment.

Some outlets have speculated about an affair as the cause of the divorce, but sources told TMZ no third person was involved in Jolie's decision to file. Instead, the decision was made solely based on "irreconcilable differences" and Pitt's interaction with the children, Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox, and Vivienne. Jolie reportedly noted that she had filed allegedly because of "the way Brad was parenting the children" and she "was extremely upset with his methods."

Parents argue over disciplining their children all the time, but for the matter to result in a divorce? It must have been something serious. The public won't know for now, however, as the couple's representatives haven't disclosed much, and Jolie — being the humanitarian that she is — is probably tied up at the United Nations General Assembly this week.

Jolie had adopted Maddox, 14, and Pax, 11, before she began seeing Pitt. After the two got together, Jolie adopted Zahara, now 10, who Pitt then filed to legally adopt. The children's last names changed to Jolie-Pitt. Shiloh, 9, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 7, were born in 2006 and 2008, respectively, as the couple's only biological children.

The couple fell in love while filming Mr. And Mrs. Smith in 2004, Jolie told The New York Times. Pitt subsequently divorced Jennifer Aniston, who he had been married to at the time. Jolie and Pitt then dated until getting engaged in 2012 and marrying in a private ceremony in France in 2014.

After being together for 10 years, many wondered why the couple finally decided to marry. Pitt told reporters that it was actually pressure from the kids that pushed them to make their partnership legal and official, according to Hollywood Life. The couple's wedding, though private, was highly publicized because of the family affair that it was. With six children, even a small ceremony became a grand event. Jolie famously wore a Versace wedding gown that was covered in illustrations made by her six children.

Unfortunately, it seems that, despite what many saw as the ultimate happy ending, the kids will now be separated from one of their parents if Jolie's custody request is granted.
