'Better Things' Will Be Back Before You Know It

Pamela Adlon's masterful show, Better Things, beloved by critics and audiences alike, is just wrapping up its second season. Even just two seasons in, the show is being called genius. So when does Better Things Season 3 premiere? The hilarious sitcom will be back in the year 2018, though an official date has not yet been released. Considering that the first two seasons premiered in the fall, it's logical to assume that the third season will do so as well. However, there are no rules when it comes to TV anymore.

Better Things stars Pamela Adlon as Sam, a working actor and single mom trying to raise her three daughters — Max, Frankie, and Duke — in LA. The show also stars Celia Imrie as Sam's caustic English mother Phil, who lives across the street. The entire show is really due to Adlon's genius. As well as starring in the series, she created it, wrote it, and directed every episode in the second season. Critics have praised Adlon's directing, acting, writing as well as the realistic portrayals of her daughters. The girls aren't just flat teen stereotypes by turns sassy and sentimental. There's something about them that always feels very real. And of course, Adlon herself is incredible.

The show was renewed by FX for a third installment just about halfway through the series' second season, a testament to its success. In a statement from FX Original Programming and FX Productions president, Eric Schrier, he praised Adlon and all that she does on the show. "Better Things’ success is testament to the creative genius of Pamela Adlon as a writer, director, and actor," he said. "It has been a joy for everyone at FX to support Pamela and see the critics and industry recognize this series as one of the very best shows on TV. Pamela and the enormously talented cast, producers, and crew have our deepest appreciation."

Though the series is undeniably Adlon's baby, Louis C.K. also played a large part in its creation. C.K. co-created the show with Adlon, and wrote or co-wrote the episodes in Season 2. Following the allegations of sexual misconduct by C.K. that were detailed in an expose in The New York Times, C.K. admitted that the stories were true in a written statement. Adlon recently released her own statement about the allegations, saying that she was "devastated" and "in shock." In response to the reports FX has cut all ties with C.K.

Following the reports and C.K.'s statement confirming the reports, FX severed all their business partnerships with the comedian and released a statement saying:

Today, FX Networks and FX Productions are ending our association with Louis C.K. We are cancelling the overall deal between FX Productions and his production company, Pig Newton. He will no longer serve as executive producer or receive compensation on any of the four shows we were producing with him – Better Things, Baskets, One Mississippi and The Cops.

The statement continued, claiming that no one at the network knew of C.K.'s behavior to have been anything other than professional, and that "now is not the time for him to make television shows."

The good news is that Better Things is on to bigger and better things. Without the collaboration of C.K., Adlon will still be in charge of writing, directing, and starring in her show. Set to air in 2018, I'm perhaps more excited than ever to see what happens next. After all, this is a show about women's experiences more than anything else. And women are now the only major creative force behind it. I can't wait.
