Season 5 Of 'The 100' Is A Ways Away

by Zakiya Jamal

As the fourth season of The 100 draws to a close, fans are already wondering when does The 100 Season 5 premiere? Thankfully, the popular sci-fi drama has already been renewed for a fifth season so it's return is guaranteed. However, fans shouldn't expect the new season anytime soon. As has been the case for every season of the series, except the second, the fifth season of The 100 won't premiere until midseason, meaning it won't come back onto our screens until sometime in 2018.

It's hard to say when exactly fans should expect the fifth season to premiere, however. The 100's schedule has been inconsistent since it first began airing back in 2014. It first premiered in March 2014, then October 2014, then January 2016, and then in February of this year. If The CW keeps a similar schedule to the one used for this past season, fans can expect The 100 to return around Feb. 7, 2018, though there's no guarantee.

Whenever the show does return, the fifth season will surely be one for the books though. Since the pilot, the show has centered on the 100 juvenile prisoners who lived on the "Ark" in space. The show began when these teens were sent to Earth to see if the planet was once again habitable and since then the characters have had to face difficult circumstances in order to survive on the planet — and grow/change in unexpected ways.

However, with the impending Death Wave that will wipe out all human life on Earth, Clarke, Bellamy, and the rest of their crew are now preparing to try and head back home to space. Whether or not they're successful in their attempt will be seen in the finale, but it seems fair to assume they will. Showrunner Jason Rothenberg told The Wrap that a return to space was almost inevitable and he's excited to return to the more sci-fi elements of the show in Season 5.

"[I've wanted to do it] forever, ever since they came to the ground," he said. "I love sci-fi. I do feel like the show became — we lost that element for seasons two, three, and most of four. I'm excited to get back up there."

However, while Clarke, Bellamy, Raven, Monty, Harper, Murphy, Emori, and Echo plan to use a rocket as a means to escape the Death Wave, the majority of the humans plan to stick it out on Earth in a bunker that will supposedly protect them. If both groups survive, it appears the show will double between life in space and life on Earth in Season 5.

You can see what happens on The 100 when the Season 4 finale airs on Wednesday, May 24 at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
