'A Series Of Unfortunate Events' Delivered A Twist

(Warning: this post contains unfortunate spoilers from Episode 1.) For a show that already seems to pride itself on being all about doom and gloom, it certainly provided fans with a not-so-unfortunate twist by the end of the very first episode. After spending a good chunk of the hour being convinced that Violet, Klaus, and Sunny's parents had been killed in a house fire, the final few moments seemed to contradict that entire story arc. They appear to still be very much alive and desperate to get back to their children, though that doesn't mean they're out of the woods just yet, considering that they've been abducted. So who kidnapped Mother and Father on A Series of Unfortunate Events? Unfortunately (see what I did there?), that's a question I doubt we'll get an answer to anytime in the foreseeable future.

Because here's the thing: there's no way to say for sure who took them at this point in time. We only just finished the very first episode, which means we still have a lot of characters to get introduced to before we should be jumping to any conclusions. Obviously, the instinctual answer would be Count Olaf since he's already proven by leaps and bounds that he has no qualms with being downright villainous, even to kind and innocent children. So he'd have no problem abducting someone as well.

As soon as he appeared on our screens, it was clear that Count Olaf cared about one thing and one thing only: money. And he's willing to do whatever it takes to claim the Baudelaire fortune as his own. But since keeping the parents alive would mean that he could lose out on the inheritance at any moment if the truth was ever discovered, then it seems unlikely that he's the guilty party. If anything, he probably would've guaranteed that they'd been killed.

That still leaves us with plenty of suspects though. Part of me likes the idea of throwing a major twist into the mix and having the kidnapper be the narrator, Lemony Snicket himself. I mean, how crazy would it be if the guy who was so intent on solving the case of their death was the one who had secretly been hiding them away this whole time? (Mind-blowing stuff, am I right?) But that seems a little too improbable even for this show, so maybe it turns out to be one of the guardians who doesn't parade their devilish ways around as obviously as Count Olaf does, which would make the reveal even more shocking down the line.

Bottom line: the abductor could be anyone at this point, so until we get a better handle of what's going on and what exactly Mother and Father have gotten themselves involved in, I think the smartest rule is to trust no one. You've been warned...
