Who Will Chris Christie Endorse? The Jury Is Still Out On That One

by Casey Suglia

After dropping out of the race for GOP party head on Wednesday, all eyes are on Chris Christie for yet another reason. For the past two days, the former Republican primary candidate has remained mum on who he'll be backing for the head of the Republican party. With only six GOP candidates remaining in the running, Christie has a variety of options and candidate platforms to choose from. So who will Chris Christie endorse for the Republican party? Well, the jury is still out on that one.

On Wednesday, shortly after businesswoman Carly Fiorina announced that she was out of the running for the Republican primary election following the results of the New Hampshire primary election, Christie followed suit and dropped out of the running as well. The Governor of New Jersey failed to qualify for South Carolina's Republican debate, as he did not meet the criteria which required candidates to place in the top five in New Hampshire, the top three in Iowa, or in the top five average in South Carolina and national polling.

Christie told ABC News that the decision to drop out of the race was a "difficult and painful one" and that "just about everyone except Ted Cruz has reached out asking for his support."

After announcing he'd left the running, Christie posted on his Facebook page:

I ran for president with the message that the government needs to once again work for the people, not the people work for the government. And while running for president I tried to reinforce what I have always believed - that speaking your mind matters, that experience matters, that competence matters and that it will always matter in leading our nation. That message was heard by and stood for by a lot of people, but just not enough and that’s ok. I have both won elections that I was supposed to lose and I’ve lost elections I was supposed to win and what that means is you never know what will happen. That is both the magic and the mystery of politics — you never quite know when which is going to happen, even when you think you do. And so today, I leave the race without an ounce of regret. I’m so proud of the campaign we ran, the people that ran it with me and all those who gave us their support and confidence along the way. Mary Pat and I thank you for the extraordinary display of loyalty, friendship, understanding and love.

In the results from the New Hampshire primary election, Christie placed sixth in New Hampshire primary, receiving 7.4 percent of the vote placing behind Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and edging out Carly Fiorina. Dr. Ben Carson is the only candidate left in the race for the Republican party who did not place in the top five in New Hampshire. Unsurprisingly, Donald Trump won the New Hampshire primary election with 35.3 of the votes.

So when Christie decides to endorse a candidate, which one will he choose? Judging from his statements to the media, it seems like it might be a while before he announces who he'll be endorsing, if he endorses any candidate at all.

However, there is one candidate Christie definitely won't be endorsing: Marco Rubio. After Rubio and Christie sparred on the stage of the New Hampshire Republican debate last Saturday, Christie was applauded by the public for calling out Rubio on his robotic and rehearsed manner. Unfortunately, the performance was not enough to bring up Christie's numbers in the polls.

Time will only tell before Christie gets on stage with a candidate endorses them for the next President of the United States of America. Till then, we'll be waiting.
