Why Wasn't There A Golden Globes In Memoriam?

At the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, some of Hollywood's biggest and brightest stars came out for the glamorous affair that kicks off awards season. But there were some noticeable stars that didn't walk the red carpet this year — but the Hollywood Foreign Press Association didn't pay tribute to all of those stars the world lost in 2016. Why wasn't there a Golden Globes "In Memoriam" this year?

Only two actresses received the full "In Memoriam" treatment at Sunday night's Golden Globes: Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher and her mother, Debbie Reynolds, who died within a day of each other in December. While it's surprising that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association chose not to include a full reel of all the many talented actors, actresses, and other entertainment professionals the world lost in 2016, an "In Memoriam" isn't typically done at the Golden Globes.

Update: A representative from the HFPA confirmed to Romper that they have not done "an in-memoriam segment on the Globes for many years."

Still, it was a glaring absence from the first awards show of the season, and after so many big names left the world in 2016, it's easy to see how fans could think that the Golden Globes forgot something very important — but really, the big "In Memoriam" reel comes at the Academy Awards.

Speaking to People, Golden Globes producer Barry Adelman said they would not include a full "In Memoriam" treatment for the very fact that other shows do it better — namely, the Academy Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. But the recent and heartbreaking loss of mother-daughter duo Reynolds and Fisher warranted some kind of memorial acknowledgment. "We do realize there were some special circumstances of very recent nature that happened and I think we’ll be acknowledging that," said Adelman. Fisher and Reynolds had their own "In Memoriam" tribute on Sunday night.

2016 was devastating to the entertainment industry and there were many actors and actresses besides Fisher and Reynolds to be remembered from this past year. There are of course the big names that the world lost in 2016, like David Bowie and Prince — those are the easy ones to recall. But there were many other stars who were also famous and well-known, having died earlier in 2016. Case in point: Garry Shandling, who died in March at age 66, and Alan Rickman of Harry Potter fame, who died January 2016 from cancer at age 69. There was also the tragic loss of 27-year-old Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin in June. And let's not forget about Gary Marshall, Gene Wilder, Alan Thicke, Zsa Zsa Gabor... Good grief, 2016 was a rough year.

So while you might feel like you've been missing an "In Memoriam" at the Golden Globes, you can be sure to look out for the most depressing segment ever at this year's Academy Awards instead.
