Alex's Fate Remains Unclear On 'Grey's Anatomy'

by Zakiya Jamal

It's almost time for the return of Grey's Anatomy and I can't wait. It's been a long time since fans have seen the doctors of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and the midseason finale ended on a cliffhanger leaving fans wondering what will happen next. Most importantly, will Alex go to jail on Grey's Anatomy? When the season wrapped its winter finale, Alex was going to the DA to accept the plea deal so that Jo wouldn't have to go on the stand and testify, potentially notifying her abusive husband of her whereabouts. However, doing this would mean he would definitely go to prison for a few years, though arguably, that's a smarter move than taking the risk of going to trial and ending up in jail for 30 years. However, as he was waiting to meet with the DA, Alex listened to Meredith's voicemail, where she pleaded with him not to take the deal and to keep fighting.

Of course, the show didn't reveal what Alex chose to do, but soon enough we'll finally know for sure and it seems most likely that he decided not to take the plea deal after all. As I mentioned, the only reason Alex was even considering it was so Jo wouldn't have to take the stand and testify, revealing the truth about her past and opening herself up to be found by her abusive husband. But with Meredith's pleas thrown into the mix, Alex probably came to his senses and decided to go to trial instead. However, if he did do this, was it really the best decision?

Although Meredith truly believes Alex can win his trial, can he? He did beat up DeLuca and almost blinded him, which would have ended his career as a doctor. Yes the circumstances around the assault were a bit complicated, but that doesn't change the fact that Alex is actually guilty. Unless DeLuca has a change of heart and drops the charges Alex doesn't really have a chance.

Then again this is TV not the real world, so who knows what kind of plot twist Shonda Rhimes has up her sleeve. This could really go either way, but I hope Alex makes it out of this without jail time and just learns his lesson. It'd be strange to see the show move forward with Alex in jail. Would Justin Chambers still even be on the show or would he leave the show completely? Let's hope it doesn't even come to that.

Grey's Anatomy returns to ABC on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 8 p.m. ET.
