A Dany/Jon meet-up has been a long time coming on Game of Thrones. They're arguably the two most iconic characters (give or take a Tyrion), and ever since last season's surprise twist that surprised no one — that Jon Snow is in fact the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen — fans are impatient to find out if Jon Snow and Daenerys will finally meet on Game of Thrones. And between a few leaked set photos and Season 7's pace reportedly speeding up into warp drive, it looks like they might finally get their wish.
It's hard to tell what the reveal of Jon's true parentage means just yet, especially since nobody but Bran actually knows it. It could point to Jon's possible role as the prophesied savior Azor Ahai. It may partially explain the whole "dragon has three heads" thing you may have forgotten about from Season 2. It very likely puts Jon and Daenerys on the same side, especially considering the other players threatening them: the Night King in the North and Cersei in the South. Who knows? Maybe this even sets Jon and Daenerys up as romantic interests, because, well, it's Game of Thrones and they're both Targaryens. No matter what it means, though, Jon and Dany crossing paths is both inevitable and significant, as it will steer the narrative off in a new direction.
Last October, several photos were released showing Emilia Clarke (Daenerys) and Kit Harington (Jon) on set and in costume together. Moreover, they were joined there by the other players in their respective storylines, most notably Davos Seaworth, Varys, Tyrion, and Missandei. The location is a sandy beach in Zumaia, Spain, and it's not clear where exactly in Westeros they're supposed to be, though you can guess it's not anywhere too far north. This suggests something huge: for the first time, Jon might be leaving the snowy North.
Jon, you may remember, has most recently been occupied with guarding the North against the White Walkers, seeing to the Wildlings' relocation south of the Wall, kicking Ramsay Bolton out of Winterfell, and reuniting the North as its king. It doesn't quite seem like the right time to pack up and head South, but we have to assume he has his reasons.
There's nothing in the trailer to suggest Jon and Daenerys will be running into each other any time soon, but those set photos basically guarantee it'll be happening at some point this season. Big things are coming, so get excited! If only it weren't a sign of the show starting to come to a close.
Season 7 of Game of Thrones will premiere on July 16 on HBO.
