Don't Expect To See Joe Biden At The WHCD

Given that our current president plans on avoiding the White House Correspondents' Dinner altogether, plenty are wondering if anyone's going to show up. Politicians past and present remain a bit vague as to the status of their RSVPs. So will Joe Biden attend the White House Correspondents' Dinner (WHCD)? He's been pretty busy lately, so chances are he won't have the time to swing by the likely-to-be-awkward affair.

Biden's first WHCD as vice president was also his last, but that wasn't because he wasn't invited. As per the White House Correspondents' Association's (WHCA) website, the dinner is "traditionally attended by the president and the first lady as well as other senior government officials and members of the press corps." Politico reminds that, typically, "the president, first lady, the vice president, White House press secretary and the dinner’s entertainer sit at the head table on the stage" next to members of the WHCA board. So though Biden hasn't commented as to whether or not any invite has been extended to him, the event on April 29 is about the current administration, and not the leaders of the past.

Still, Biden isn't necessarily the biggest fan of the WHCD. Back in 2014, he filmed a sketch withVeep's Julia Louis-Dreyfus, parodying what would happen if the two decided to skip the dinner together. Louis-Dreyfus (playing her character, Vice President Selina Meyer) asks if Biden's planning on going to the WHCD that night. He tells her: "No, I'm not going, man, I've been there once — it's a bunch of politicians trying to explain politics to Hollywood. It's not worth it." The two then proceed to sneak into the Oval Office, snack on tubs of ice cream (getting caught by Michelle Obama herself), and ink themselves with matching tattoos. Since his time working in The White House came to a close, Biden has kept himself quite busy. He's been speaking on behalf of his sexual assault awareness organization, It's On Us, visiting college campuses to spread the message. Through The Biden Foundation, he and his wife, Jill, are working diligently to fight cancer in honor of their late son, Beau. It seems that everywhere he goes (basketball games included), Biden fans can't contain their love for the former VP and all that he continues to do.

This year's WHCD is sure to be a strange one, many predict, with regulars commenting on an already existent "weirdness" and "uncertainty" surrounding it. Seeing as he's got plenty of other things he's working on, one would surmise that an event satirizing an absent political figure isn't really at the top of Biden's list — unless there's ice cream involved, perhaps. Biden's full agenda suggests that, more likely than not, you can count him out.
