Woman Wears Swimsuit To Pool, People Go Bananas

Supposedly our world is changing. Supposedly we're becoming more conscious of the way we treat each other, of the way our words can affect the way people see themselves. Word on the street is that we are becoming more body positive... but perhaps the street doesn't quite extend poolside. Because when a woman is asked to cover up her inappropriate bathing suit or leave, that's not body positivity. It's the same good, old-fashioned body shaming women have been struggling with ever since bodies were a thing.

Tori Jenkins of Knoxville, Tennessee was at her apartment complex pool on Tuesday, hoping to enjoy a little relief from the heat. Except nope. According to her fiancee, Tyler Newman, Jenkins was asked to either cover up her "inapproriate" one-piece pink bathing suit by putting on some shorts, or leaving the area. Newman wrote in a Facebook post:

Today my fiancée was faced with either changing her bathing suit, covering up with shorts, or leaving the pool that we paid a $300 fee to maintain on top of a monthly rent of nearly $1000 (not including utilities and wifi). Tori was accused of wearing a "thong bathing suit" and told there were complaints about the way she was dressed after roughly 3 minutes tops, of us arriving there.

Not that it matters, but Jenkins was wearing a perfectly normal pink one-piece bathing suit.

As the couple sat with their friends in disbelief, Jenkins decided to go speak to a woman who works in the apartment complex about being asked to leave the pool. She was apparently asked by the leasing manager to "look at her body in the mirror," and as if that wasn't weird enough, the leasing manager told her she wouldn't want her kids around Jenkins because the bathing suit didn't quite cover enough of her bum, and that her "curvy" body was deemed inappropriate to be seen by children.

Also she might excite the teenage boys who live in the complex. So get out the parka, I guess.

Happily, the internet has (mostly) rallied behind Jenkins. Newman's post has been viewed over 26,000 times and the comments have been overwhelmingly positive.

Facebook user Erica Kelly commented: That bathing suit is cute af and she rocks the shit out of it.
While user Tara Marsh wrote: You look amazing! I'm so sorry people can be such a-holes! You didn't deserve anything that happened to you that day. I hope you won't let that awful woman's words change the way you view yourself or your body. Hugs to you!!

Despite the fact that no one from the apartment complex has apologized, Tori Jenkins is taking the insulting incident in stride. She told The Daily Mail:

If you see something happening you feel is wrong, speak up. And if it happens to you, keep your head high and only pay attention to the positivity in your life. Don't let anyone make you feel less than you're worth.

Hear, hear.
